Right about now, I'm getting a bit fed up with all the advice that "you should get an SUV, you know".

Yes, I am aware that I am now living in Dubai, and that this city is built on sand, and I am also aware that SUVs are very popular, and that you can see out of them, but why in the hell should I buy a big, heavy, slow and underbraked truck when I want to buy a sports car?
get yourself a Raptor and have both? Hilarious handling, outrageous performance win/win

I had the same when I lived in Dubai, bought a Corvette Z06 - £11 to fill the tank!

Good guess. I think some do.
I'm pretty sure it's a diesel he's got, I would just ask him but I'd risk another interminable lecture on how fking fantastic VWs are. What I reckon is that he learn this vaguely technical term to do with cars, though 'I don't know what that is, but no-one else will either so I'll say my car's got it next time I feel like spouting off'. To be fair it does sound better than saying that your car comes with a tank of what is basically condensed piss.
Does his VW look rather like a Fiat 500 twin air?

Not really stupid but more annoying things non petrolheads say is "Why bother cleaning your car, it is just going to get dirty again."
I'd certainly class myself as a petrolhead but I can't imagine anything I'd rather do less than clean my car, hence it has been cleaned twice in the 6 months + I've owned it, neither times by me

It gone quite a nice dark shade of red after a few months of not cleaning when viewed from a distance haha
Me too, most of my good mates are into cars also, most not as much as me admittedly (im the only real car 'nerd') but they all clean their cars like clockwork on a weekend.

Im the opposite, I just cant be bothered to do it. My current car, a blue MX5 hides the dirt very well so you cant tell until up close. My previous car was a 2009 A3 that was worth a lot more than the 5 and was black, and that never got cleaned, but because it was black it looked dirty ALL the time, I used to get family members saying to me that I should sell it as I dont look after it! I spend 1k maintaining it in the year that I had it (Tyres, Service, Cambelt etc) but no, just because its not clean its apparently it wasnt cared for. I once tried to explain, but as usual it went in one ear, out of the other.

I must admit I can't remember the last time mine was washed - several years ago. There is lichen growing on parts of it biggrin

Friend told me he got a new fast car.

He's in college with me, previous cars are a ka and some peugeot hatch, so not expecting a lot. He's got one of those a1 competition edition things.

Pretty much the opposite of fast
I'll bite, an Audi A1 competition is a 1.4tsfi which with dsg does 0-60 in under 7 seconds. I'd say that's a fast car, especially for a college kid.

About as fast as a 320d, so all the car anyone will ever need.

It's not slow. But it's not fast, college car park has loads of scoobys, r32 golf, a skyline, escort cosworth too.

I'd argue the A1 would be on par with a few of them. Besides, it's a proper sport model, not a diesel with a sport badge.

You're just as bad! I don't want a big heavy but very fast truck either, although I must admit that there is some appeal in the full on Velociraptor!

That being said, if I was going to go American, I'd be looking at the Dodge Challenger R/T. In apple green with the black stripe down the side and maybe even the 70's shiny chrome rims. And a stick.

I think of myself as a petrol head and I absolutely hate my cars dirty, but I live in the country and the roads are either covered in wet mud or muddy dust. I just don't have the time or energy to keep them clean to the sort of standard I want.

Where I perhaps differ from some is that I'd rather not clean it at all than to do it badly more often. I know that under the protective layer of crap my paintwork is actually pretty good.

My car gets washed every week, by me, by hand. I hate dirty cars. There is much pleasure to be had from the reflections in a well maintained paint job on a nice car.

It takes 45 mins to wash and wax it. It's not exactly a long time. Leave if for months and it takes much longer and the very act of washing it is more likely to damage the paint.

One of mine has a lovely patch of lichen on the roof : some environmental vandal at wotk threatened to jet wash it!
I'm thinking of applying for it to become a national park.
idea or become a lichen farmer and claim the van as expenses.

What sort of college are you at!!?

Things must have changed a lot since my time when the most exciting car was one of the teachers mk1 Golf GTIs, all the 6 formers drove barely £1000-£2000 cars in less they had mummy or daddies car and teachers had Vectras/mondeos/low spec BMWs

Guy I work with constantly talks about his 04 Audi A3 TDi. It's been mapped, so apparently has 220bhp. He's certain of this. Also, the amount of "Thrashed him didnt i m8" Stories of pulling away from much faster cars. Any car gets mentioned, he'll butt in with "Yeah but my A3 Sline turbo would SMASH IT"

I used to clean my celica once a week, using TFR and a power washer

Maybe it's an MX5 thing not cleaning them

I think the "competition line" edition only gets the cooking 120BHP 1.4, and struggles to better 9 seconds. The 185BHP version allegedly does 6.9 seconds, but isn't available in 'competition line' trim.

No, my wife's always getting hers cleaned. I think it's a male compensatory thing. "Yeah, I drive an MX-5..but it's DIRTY!" wink

My car's dirty because I'm too lazy to do it myself and too stingey to pay anyone else to do it. Occasionally if my wife wants to borrow it to ferry people around I'll get it washed (stingeyness overcoming laziness) out of embarrassment.
