ETA: wankel engine has never been a success.
To add balance, it's had <1% of the research, investment and development that's gone into a 'standard' (otto cycle) 4-stroke internal combustion engine. I suspect that given enough development the rotor-tip issue is resolvable*, while economy is only an issue in modern society because of tax legislation...

* A lot of owners swear by treating it like a 2-stroke - adding a very small amount of oil to every other tank. That and keeping a very close eye on coil packs - coil-pack failure = overfuelling = washing the oil straight off the rotors! So the fundamental problems ARE well known, but they just require either more engineering thought/effort to eliminate, or a mechanically-sympathetic owner...think back to the days of carbs and a lot more car owners knew how to look after the basic elements of their cars...it's only the last 30 years with modern electronics that have led to what we consider the 'normal' engine type being as reliable / appliance-like as it is...

I thought exactly the same on reading your first line but you concluded for me, its only within the last 20 years or so we've got to the stage people ignore the noisy bit under the bonnet until the dash beeps at them to do something, and 4 strokes have their issues and fails along the way, like nikasil on bims.

It's said that the 1UZ-FE is about 30% larger than a 350, and reading measurements it's around 700mm in each direction.

Sump to rocker cover in the mx5 is 610mm and there's not much clearance left so I think it's unlikely that the Toyota lump would fit.

I know the Alfa Busso V6 is too tall as well.

I'm wondering about the Maserati 4200 engine tho.

One of the women at work today discussing her new car choice with one of the other birds:
"It's a Mercedes, I think it's an E-type 2-series? It's the same as the BMW isn't it, the 2-series is the type of car?"

My dad calls a 3 series a series 3. I have corrected him 1457 times, and he looks confused every time. He's not even old.

Well, I have one of each, so it'd get damn confusing.

Would be fun I guess, but there are many engines I'd put the time and effort into fitting to an MX-5 that'd be more suitable, more powerful, lighter, or cheaper, before one of them.
Yup. Either an LS v8 or a 20b triple rotor would be ideal imo.

20b wouldn't be great in a 5 IMO

Too big - 13b would be sufficient.

But they make a wayyyy better noise than the two rotor.
