I know the trend is downsizing, but when did a 1.6 become a 'big' engine?...unless fitted to a Corsa etc to impress your mates as your first car was "powerful cos it has a big engine see"

Yep, maybe I should go watch naked men pretend to fight instead! Stoopid yocals...
What?
As in maybe I should be a WWE fan boi, and take time off work to watch pay per view wrestling, to fit in with the locals.
Nope, still none the wiser.

It's a sad state of affairs when 1.6-2.0L is considered "big".
I suppose it depends what you are familiar with. To me 2L and under is small 4 to 5L normal and 7L plus is big.

Gave some colleagues a lift in the RR the other day - one remarked "It must have a big engine, this? What is it, a 1.6?"
When I told him it was a 4.4 his head nearly exploded hehe
I used to get similar when I had an SL500- "i bet that's got a really big 3 litre engine!"
No, its a 5 litre V8. " Bloody hell- that must cost a fortune to run". Not really, its more economical on the long journeys than my diesel pickup.

They couldn't get there head around that fact.

to a non-petrolhead that probably does seem big, but this thread is all about how they are fools with misguided opinions smile

get similar reactions when they ask me what size engine my Mustang has - my answer is generally "...it's only 4.6..." which really confuses them lol

At least once a week, without fail, I hear a comment from across the office..

Whenever a visitor parks in one of the bays under the office window in a 3 Series, C Class, A4 etc.. the 'bloody hell, posh car for so-and-so', or 'you can tell they're on a right whack driving around in Beemers..'

We have Golfs and Insignia company cars. We also have the option of a car allowance, which could be used to easily procure one of those cars, if only they knew laugh

Someone pointed out a large bike across the street, 'that's big, what is it a 1000cc?'.

I told him it was 2.3 litres but he didn't believe me.

I even had that with my FJR1300, it was surprising how many folks had cars with less capacity

(as an aside, I'd often chuckle at the thought of it having the same capacity as 25 'peds, usually when a spotty faced yoof would pull up next to me, poking his caged wasp)

Isn't that what anyone would do, if they found themselves in possession of a couple of barrels off a radial aircraft engine? smile
