And anyway, who cares if it does share Mondeo parts? The A4 and Passat once shared a platform, and I don't remember anyone caring.
badge snobbery pure and simple - something that we Brits seem to do exceedingly well at the moment frown
True, but in those days (mid 90s) arguably the VW badge wasn't as prestigious as it is now. Although I suppose neither was Audi...
The deputy rector at my school in the 70s had an Audi 100 Coupe, which was quite exotic in those days. As time wore on Audis became more common but I think they've always been seen as a more prestigious brand than VW, mostly by dint of clever marketing - vorsprung durch technic, and all that...

VDT is a mid-80s phrase IIRC

1971 in Germany, but used in the 1980s in the UK.

I think it is true that they were more prestigious than VW but they were still a step below BMW and Mercedes when I were a lad and my Dad had three 80s (1988 and two from 1991).

"It can`t be that fast, it`s a Jeep"

That was a silly comment I heard recently.

My sister, who is 23 and interested in learning to drive, cannot grasp how steering a car works when reversing. I spent a good amount of my evening trying to explain to her how, if you turn the wheels towards the left and then reverse, the car will move towards your left. I even had to get assistance from a 1:18th Porsche 356 but to no avail. The stupid thing she said (repeatedly) was "No, I still don't get it."

To be fair, after the first "I still don't get it" you should have left it at that.

You'd be surprised at the number of learners that struggle with this. I find that thinking about their position in relation to the kerb helps. Too close to the kerb? Steer away. They seem to be able to get their heads round that.

I'm hoping that comment was made at a set of traffic lights with a clear, straight road ahead wink

O/T: Just out of interest, the picture for the SRT profile (of the 0-60 time) looks like it was done on an android device. Did this use an app for the timer, and which one if so?

Oh, and here's a couple of stupid non petrol head sayings I've heard in the last couple of weeks.

1.) A guy commenting on his Polo GT TDI:

"That french thing has no chance of catching a VW! It doesn't even have back seats!"

He was referring (without prompt from me) to my thoroughly track ready 306 Rallye.
Well we all know you fold the backseats down to reduce weight.
Indeed. I've heard from a reliable source that a Gti6 with the back seats folded down can outsprint an E46 M3 in July.

When I told my friend that I'd test drove a 987 Boxster S 3.2 yesterday morning, he told me that it was the poor mans Porsche, I couldn't afford a 911 etc.

His dad has a 2.7 Cayman - which he never shuts up about.

Reducing the centre of gravity improves the handling. Or something.

You need to open the glove box too, and have your jeans around your ankles apparently.

Need to have a go-kart type car as a kid, you'll remember that for the rest of your life.

Can she cope with the concept that if she turns the wheel to the left and goes forward the car goes left?

I don't think the VW badge is prestigious. The Golf is seen as class-leading but I don't think the same applies to any other VWs - lots of them are seen as very much equivalent to Fords rather than Audis or Mercs.

OBD bluetooth plug in from eBay at £20 and the `Torque` app downloaded from google playstore at £2.99. Will work with any phone I think. Can have different profiles and tried it in my mates remapped Golf Tdi and managed a respectable 7.2 seconds (and cleared his EML ).

Do you need the OBD thing? I thought it'd figure it out from accelerometers and GPS?
I'd hardly rely on OBD data for it, you may as well use a stopwatch.
