Yes, but with a centrifugal compressor, if you direct drive it, its output will be nothing till high rpm.

This solution has the ability to vary the gearing between crank and compressor.
My old centrifugal (I think) was 6 psi at 900 rpm, and 9.1 psi at 9200 rpm.
For that to be true, you must have been running some form of boost dump valve or the like.

Centrifugal compressor just don't work like that, you only have to look at a compressor performance map to see.

Yup, a re-circ valve. Shuts with throttle. Was a part of the standard kit.

I believe the Rotrex chargers have a CVT type arrangement. Gives better low end, but less top end.
But I've not looked into how they actually do it.

No, and no they don't.

Where do you get this stuff from?

I think I was reading this :-

Rotrak, the 50:50 joint-venture between traction drive specialist Torotrak plc and centrifugal supercharger company Rotrex A/S, is testing an advanced variable drive supercharger technology at Torotrak PLC’s test facility in Leyland, UK.

It looks like I'd read about the CVT testing above and assumed they'd have done it by now.

As I said, I'd not really looked into it. I was well out the super charger game by that point. I had done mine before the Rotrex kits came out (was a Comptech install).

I like the "AFSH". I was wondering what that was supposed to mean, then the "almost full service history line".

What counts as "almost"? 20%, 50%?

Similar to the phrase "service history", this apparently means there is proof that the car has had some servicing done (how much is the thing we are most interested in but this is usually omitted) rolleyes

ETA

The most ludicrous of the statements for me was "much sought after vehicle". By whom? As it went for £12xx seems not that sought after!

This closely pipped "sooo fast" (in comparison to a bus, yes perhaps) and "sits well". How exactly does a car sit? Or is it sooo fast it travels on it's hind legs when setting off and sits down when at a steady speed?

Just picked up my Alpina B10 V8.

Having a great laugh hearing some of the comments from friends family & neighbours biggrin

"Is it a diesel?"

"Is it an S line?"

"Is it a peugeot?"

"4.6 litre? The don't make car engines that big..."

"How much?! I've seen a newer BMW for less (a tatty e46 318i) you've been ripped off!"

"How much does it cost to fill up?"

Bless them!

haha at least people have noticed it.

I do like an Alpina, doubt you'd want to try to explain to any of those people that although it resembles a BMW Alpina are a manufacture in their own right.

I do love the "how much does it cost to fill" comment. Speaking about the recent drop in fuel prices and one of my colleagues announces that it only cost her £70 to fill her car instead of £90, another colleague pipes up "gosh your car is expensive to run mine only costs £50."

Do people really not understand that larger cars often have larger fuel tanks?

People at work wax lyrical about how much power their latest diesel eurobox has (usually things like the aforementioned 1.5 Nissan Qashqai).

To put it into perspective here is a 'grudge' race between my friend Jon and I.

You Tube link to race

My car runs low 13's; it is not a fast car in drag racing terms.

Jon's car is a 2005 2.0L diesel people carrier 130hp and 310lb/ft. Bear in mind that it also has all five of the rear seats removed so it is considerably lighter (those seats are fking heavy) than its normal curb weight..
Car designed to be fast is faster than car not designed to be fast! No way!

On the other hand, I expect your mate Jon did rather better in the later 'getting things home from Ikea' and the 'going on holiday with the kids' challenges. What's your point?

I imagine there was some previous back and forth between the two, probably about how the Mustang can't be that much faster than the Nissan. There's obviously some back story there.

My point was to re-enforce the fact that cars many people consider to have "poke" and "lots of power" are not actually that quick, which usually equates to some sort of 2.0L TDI with a similar weight.

Depends how you define quick. It's a darm sight quicker than my old Viva, and quicker than 'family' cars of relatively recently.

I think that's the point; they are relatively quick, but people talk about them as though they are supercars.

I know, very hard to explain. Although I find it pretty easy to keep calm and not sound like a know it all!

The fuel tank thing I find equally baffling. I think many consider them to be a box shaped thing that manufacturers all provide identical versions of with the same capacity.

The thing is, many cars often have similar ranges even if the tanks are smaller or larger.

(But not all of course and therefore mpg is good to know!)

I told the guys at work that I was getting exactly the same range out of a full tank from my Daewoo 1.4 as I was from my Jag XJR. They couldnt comprehend that the Jag has a fuel tank twice as big as the Daewoo, it just didnt compute for them. General astonishment all round that both cars could go the same distance on one tank despite the Jag being a 400BHP monster.

Not having a go or being funny so please don't take it as such but are alpina a manufacturer? really?

To my untrained eye it looks like they take a BMW put some blingy wheels and bumpers on it, tune the engine and charge a premium for it, I don't see how that is different to kahn for example except only dealing in BMW's
