Stupid things non petrolheads say....

To be honest complaining about the price offered for their car is a non-petrolhead issue. They've got a book, and the price is the price in the book. You might not like it, but that's what it's worth as a P/X. Could always sell privately if it's so good.

If I try to sell privately I will have to suffer the people this thread is about, don't think my sanity could take "Like, this tyre 'as 1 psi less than t'others so I'll give yer 300 quid innit"
No, think I'll keep it (and my hard earned money) thanks. If I try to sell privately I will have to suffer the people this thread is about, don't think my sanity could take "Like, this tyre 'as 1 psi less than t'others so I'll give yer 300 quid innit"
Perhaps the reason "the book" gives an unrealistic price is that people normally sell a car with faults that a dealer has to rectify at their cost, because they don't want to spend money on a car they intend getting rid of? Or perhaps it is profiteering? Either way not giving them a car for £300 that they can sell, hardly without touching for £1500 ish.
They can plainly see that the car is looked after rather than the usual shed, so just having a tug on my trouser leg to see if I am a mug.
So the "its rare" because ........................... argument works for them but not for us. "Not really common these", does that not make it rare then?
Some of the dealers knew nothing about the cars they or I wanted to sell and had to browse the Internet to find out. That sounds like something non-petrol heads would say or do, does it not?
A common one that a lot of people (non petrolheads) stand by, is the concrete belief that under no circumstances will a car with a smaller engine capacity be faster than one with a bigger engine. Any mention of fuel type or turbo's just confuses them.
Classic case in point recently is a girl i know looking for a new car. Against my (and her boyfriends) advice is buying a new 1.25 fiesta over the 1.0 ecoboost as a 1.0 "will be slow", and her old 1.25 fiesta was "really fast"
Doh.

A new 1.25 Fiesta
Please tell me it will at least be the 82 bhp powerhouse and not the wheezy 60 bhp version?I've driven the 82 bhp version and while it was hardly quick, it's not completely awful once you accept the car's limits - and the fact that the chassis could cope with twice as much power and put a grin on your face.

Very true. A guy at my old work was convinced his 1.4 Polo which has something like 80bhp was quicker than another colleagues' modified Toyota Starlet Glanza as his was only a 1.3. ust confuses them.

A girl I used to work with suffered from this - swapped her 1.2 Corsa for a 1.5 because she thought it would be faster...Classic case in point recently is a girl i know looking for a new car. That's a 1.2i petrol swapped for a 1.5 non-turbo diesel
Non-petrolhead - "That's a nice car"
Me - "Thanks"
"What is it? Vauxhall?"
"No its a" (buts in before I can finish)
"Oh Ford its a Ford isn't it"
"No its a"
"Mercedes? Nice"
"No"
"Volkswagen, nice cars them German cars"
"No its a Mazda"
"Oh"
It's actually a Mazda 6 Tourer but as soon as I said Mazda he lost interest for some reason :S

Me and a girl at work who claims to be into cars discussing our cars and a theoretical race between the two.
Her 'well my cars really good off the line so I reckon I could probably beat you to be honest'
Me 'Really? Your Suzuki Alto 1 litre would beat my Celica 1.8? You have half the power and 5 seconds slower to 60.'
Her 'Yeah but once I'm ahead it doesn't matter how much faster your car is you can't legally overtake'
In what world is overtaking illegal? probably the same one her alto is faster than my celica.
PS> I know my celica is not a fast car but it is certainly faster than her alto'

someone at my work just said they can get to 80 in 3rd gear in their 1.0L Corsa (i had one, it would barely do 80 in 5th ) didn't want to say anything to harm the guys ego as he was trying to show off to one of the Newbie girls here.
I just smiled to myself and carried on working
I've got a 1.2 Clio, not sure what I'd hit first in third gear, 80 or the limiter but I'd presume the limiter. Certainly wouldn't want to ever try it.I just smiled to myself and carried on working

if it's been well looked after, is a great example, the book price is somehow wrong and the salesman is trying to mug you off, then why on earth are you trying to chop it in? If it's a great car, sell it privately for the price you want. If you can't, then maybe the price you want is the one that's unrealistic. It's only worth what someone will pay - and yes the book price (and actually it's a number of prices depending on condition, not a single price) is an aggregate. However if you just know it's worth more not sure why you would be pissing into the wind getting red-faced on a dealer forecourt. If you can't sell it privately or as a P/X then it's time to acknowledge that you might be wrong.
Not sure why you keep telling me I am wrong?I don't want to deal with the people this thread is about and tyre kickers, thought I had made this quite plain but obviously not.
I prefer to deal with dealers as they are supposed to know what they are doing and makes the change easier (especially as I need to transfer my non-dating registration plate). Point I was trying to make is some of the dealers I have spoken to recently seem to be on a par with the people this thread is about.
Thanks for your advice however.
