RE: Aston Targets Le Mans Victory With New LMP1
Discussion
From reading this article I get the impression that the 2011 regulations are still not yet set in stone. Can this really be the case? With under 10 months to go until the race, I'd have thought the ACO would have agreed and released the regulations for 2011 by now. But they are French.......
Why are they showing us styling images of a racing car? Is that not an oxymoron? A racing car needs to be function before form does it not? Whilst some of the best racing cars that have existed do indeed look great, is that not a product of good fundamental engineering design?! All credit to them for going for it, but it seems like the wrong angle to take!
This is fantastic news for LMP1. I trust the regulations will allow parity between the diesels and petrols. It was clear from watching yesterday that the Peugeot is phenomenal under braking, quite apart from its prodigious straightline speed. That V12 in the Aston though is the most sonourous I've heard in a sports prototype since the Ferrari 333SP. Amazing.

Was as Silverstone yesterday. Apart from the Saleen and Aston V8 in the GT class, those diesels did sound awesome!!!!
I was there also - and there was nothing, nothing, that sounded quite like the LPM1 Aston's.....Screaming like Meg Ryan on a good day...
Seeing them up close on the grid walk was brilliant, tiny inside those cockpits!

Should be a coupe not an open top in my opinion. The open car doesn't fit in with their image really.
What image would that be? NOt, I assume, Aston's previous Le Mans racers So for the first time in Aston Martins long and cherished racing history, in 2011 a race car which shares nothing with Aston Martin will bear the name. The only connection would seem to be David Richards, head of Prodrive and Chairman of AML. As far as I am aware Prodrive has no in-house capability, facilities nor experience to produce either the car nor the engine. On the engine front the 2011 Le Mans regs will require an engine capacity which is not available from AML. Could it be that Mr Richards is simply milking his connections......?

...Bit selective there (although I'll concede it's a significant model! ), can you ONE other open top Aston racer? M.
If that was aimed at me that's an easy one; the Le Mans, Ulster, DB3, DB3S, DBR1, DBR4 (F1) and you should probably count the David Brown Lagonda V12 Le Mans... there's probably a few others but that's a start RichB said:

Likewise, I like racing cars open or closed. For me the DB3S would be my dream car but then there was the DP21x cars and of course the Zagato DBs 1VEV & 2VEV plus the DB4GTs so there are some wonderful coupe Aston racers but like you say the 50s was their hay-days with the DB3S and DBR1/2 cars...

So the Peugeot and Audi LMP1 racers look just like their road cars do they??OH and that Ferrari F1 has so much in common with with the 458!
