I like them, although it is interesting that VW can only be bothered to create a cabrio version of the Golf every 2 generations!

I had an '82 1.6GL Cabrio and a '91 Clipper 1.8. Both had diabolical brakes and no power steering. Great fun cars though cool

I had a 1.5GL. Auto. Slow as a slow thing, but good fun.

I recall RHD conversions had dodgy brakes as they left the servo etc in the same place as the LHD drive cars, but used a link bar behind the dash.

Totally agree about the old Polo seats with bad memories of a 5 hour drive to Wales in a Mk2 Polo. Lucky i think the missing the "seat brick" out of Golfs and they are actually quite comfy.

True, this was finally sorted in the South African version, the Citi Golf which was still produced until recently. I think you can buy a kit from SA which sorts the brakes out.

great shed! good value despite 170k! had a white clipper once. sprayed it silver, stuck a blue mohair hood on it, added coilovers and slammed it on some ronal turbos..... miss it sooo much. watch out for clutch cable, has tendency to snap through the bulkhead due to leaves blocking the drains on either side(will also cause water ingress behind footwell)

I have a white clipper as my daily drive, as the nice car would be vandelised if I took that to work.

Its done 119k and still going strong...no rust, starts every day and never let me down. I love it to bits.

I always thought the Cabrio was a bit 'white stiletto, leather mini'.

Excellent Shed! I've had a couple over the years.... having driven the escort and the Cti, the golf is a better car IMO, unlike the Gti 205 the Cti is a twisty little chap.... much better is the 1.4 Rolland Garros 205 cab..... at least you get nice cream leather! and the ford has little or no discernible character.

Just bought a 1989 E30 325 Convertible for £950, it is rust free has 12 months MOT and has cleaned up quite well, certainly classier and more preferable than the Golf, Astra, 205, Escort dropheads of that era.
