Looks nice, but not too sure on the red. Looks best in white I think.
Looks pretty cheap in red...
Awful launch colour, should have been a dark colour.
but then you wouldn't have been able to tell it apart from an S-Line diesel!

I too drove one last week, as I'm in the market for a car of this ilk. For me, it is up against:
M3
1-2 year old 911 C2 'S'
C63
Why a 1-2 year old 997S?

They are 74k new, and Porsche are doing discounts on that model - youd get one closer to £70k
They are 74k with nothing on them you can add at least 6-8k to that price for a half decent spec so 80-82k before discount and about 74-76k after. You can pick a gen2 c2s for less than 58k so secondhand would make sense...

Like has been said, the badge is starting to wear off. It's on every model now. Excellent build quality of the car as my friends sister owns the 2.0 Diseasel varient, but I'd much rather pass on this tbh.

I've got a B7 RS4 saloon, and I can't see myself moving 'up' to an RS5.

What's more, an RS4 now costs little more than half that of a new RS5. There's really not much point.

But then, if you don't have an RS4 and if you want a 'softer GT' with a big engine and want to be a little different from the M3 crowd, I can see this being a very nice motor.

I also own the V8 RS4, and reading this I am slightly put off by this new RS5. I like the big clunky manual gear box!

Do they do a 6 speed manual option?

Think ill stick to the RS4 smile

I had a drive in an RS5 two weeks ago (for about 20 mins). I am on my third RS4 since purchasing my first one in '05 (don't ask what happened to it). I have to say, the article is very well written... and is how I felt about the car.

I'm no expert but having driven the RS4 for 5 years the RS5 would have to be truly epic to get anywhere near the RS4. But perhaps Audi are going after a different type of animal... an RS owner who needs to leave the pace notes at home when he drives to work... so if that's the case, the RS5 probably ticks those buttons.

IMHO... grab yourself an RS4 before these types of car aren’t made anymore. Then kindly ask your Mrs. to vacate the marital home. Then make your bed with the RS4 instead.

...thank you Mr Toad for your support.

The Alpina has alas been moved to Defcon 2. If there is any money left out of the forthcoming split from the current Mrs Discount Dave; then that will be put into a Lambo'allardo fund (Defcon 1). Which given its current family lineage, IMHO is an RS4 on a wack load of bolivian marching powder.

How fares your 911 track car - the one with all the stickers on it... has Plato asked for them back?

damn you and your Gayllardo Dave, the only place for a big lump is in the rear deck and you know it

P7ATO and I have shared many things (including a comely a/c mgr of your acquaintance) but he will never lay hands on my GT3

anyway, back on topic, the RS4 is truly the business, I am going to go and stroke mine now

Not had mines for that long, only 3 months now. Love every minute of it, think I need to bag myself a test drive too in one of these RS5's, think i'll call it the "Diet RS4"

Agree with the wheels comment - but not the red - wait till you see it in red in person - looks superb.

The RS5 should have been offered with a N/A V10 producing c500BHP, a slick 6 speed manual gearbox and a suspension system that does not have significant issues still surrounding it. Don't start me on the grill that is waaaaaay too much for a Friday afternoon biggrin

The pricing structure is also alien to what you would expect if you have an RS4 (stunning machine btw) and were considering a move to the RS5 - the jump is way to far for no real extra enjoyment and 2 less doors.

Fail in my opinion and I'm glad I have had my deposit refunded.

Sat in one of these a few weeks back, stunning interior but makes my E39 M5 look slim.

I'd prefer it with a turbocharged inline 5, 300 or so bhp, some weight loss and a manual gearbox. Then I'd try to buy one. As it is, I'll stick with what I've got.

Audi could of saved a packet of money and made this car more desirable.

Suspension set up and and transmission from the RS4 and this new engine..who would have complained? > There in lies the question is the core customer base of these cars , M3 included, the kind that needs new tech with every new car? The Marketing departments of BMW and Audi seem to think so because they get fatter and more gadget laden with every release...so are they still enthusiasts cars? or must have gadgets?
Personally I'd love this car but I then I do do like tech and gadgets...would I call it and enthusiasts car? not sure

Sounds wicked. My only concern would be the longevity of the S-tronic cogbox. With 444BHP on one end and monster 4WD grip on the other end... Its a tough gig for a gearbox, and I gather whilst they are certainly not all doomed to failure, they aren't bulletproof either?

8250RPM for a V8 though......... thats good going by anyones standards.

I dont fancy the RS4; suspension issues and the lack of power due to carbon build up really makes a joke of the car.

Why don't high end cars work as well as low end cars? i.e a Ford Focus vs 911? The Focus will outlast the 911. Yes yes the 911 is high performance... blah blah.. it also costs 5 times more. Surely it should be as good in terms of quality as a Focus?
