I have an ealr 90s magazine (performanxce car) and inside is a 4 page leaflet advertising the launch of this very magazine, with a Dimmer 205 and Renault 5GT buyers guide. Might be worth 20p now...
I do remember the 1st edition with that Dimma 205........ it looked gorgeous to me at the time even though it was purple as i recall Seen one in the flesh since and it looked decidedly Airfix
Wasn't Vicki Butler Henderson a scribbler for Max Power back then ?
I bought most issues of Max Power from issue 2 (I was 16 in 1993) for a couple of years.
Some of the cars were genuinely good, although a lot were quite tacky. They did feature some 'technical' articles which were ok for a young lad. I had a look through a copy a few years ago and it appeared to be full of rough looking girls posing on Saxo bonnets outside a drive-through McDonalds.
Had I had the money when I was 17, I'd have had a Mk3/4 Escort Van in purple with dark tinted windows, an RS Turbo engine and RS wheels. It sounds a bit less appealing now, though....
I now like Practical Performance Car.

Number 1 to 7 issues was the build of Rs kicker. The Carlton wasn't done til after that. I know this as i have the original Max Power folder with issues 1 to 7 and i own the Rs kicker and have done for 4 years now. Unfortunately i'm now having to sell as i'm leaving the country and can't take her with me. bugger! please look on Ebay soon for it. I was asked to have my car in the last issue and i then heard nothing more... gutting really as my car was the 1sy project car and should have been in it. Whatever anyone says about Max Power in the last few years or helped shape the modding scene in the uk in a good way back in the 90's. Was a good mag back when i 1st bought it in 93.
That sure is a 'blast from the past' - I remember reading the 'build' in MP years ago. [quote=Alice Cupra]
I read that is was up for sale on ebay at the end of last year?
And according to PassionFord, the rest are:
Project XS - BMW 3 Series - Missing
RS Kicker - Escort RST - Was about but not heard or seen it since 2000
Project Thunder - Vauxhall Carlton - Destroyed by the lad that won it
Mad Max - VW Corrado - Was around Harlow for a while but not heard anything since
Project 2000 - RS2000 - Still about, was for sale not so long ago
Project Maxi - Saxo - Probably in the possesion of some spotty chav tt
Went to a ultimate fast car weekender at Santa Pod in 1996, on the saturday night a load of drunk yoofs where stood at the entrance demanding any car what came in had to do a burnout or be trashed. The Mad Max Corrado turned up and driver failed to comply, subsequently go the st kicked out of the car.
On the Sunday it was on the pioneer stand, nursing aload of dents and scratches.

..And no doubt these fktards have gone on to reproduce...On the Sunday it was on the pioneer stand, nursing aload of dents and scratches.
What the hell is so fascinating about a 'burnout' anyway? I've never understood it. Years ago someone pulled up at some traffic lights in town in an old E28 BMW and proceeded to perform one, no doubt because there were a few people about to show off to (he thought we were impressed anyway).
Needless to say that was one huuuge tt behind the wheel.
It's never a good thing, I hate the anti max power crew. Ok I admit it's not to everyones taste (including mine) but it shows an enthusiasm for cars. The same as classic enthusiasts, off roaders, sports car enthusiasts, etc. Most petrolheads normally fit into a category, however if a category is removed there are fewer car enthusiasts as a whole.
I know some will have moved into the OEM scene (myself included) but it also shows the next generation of 17/18 year olds aren't as bothered about cars as the generation before. So give it 20 years when they are in their prime to be spending money on a nice car and they won't be. Therefore the manufacturers won't have as much of a need to cater for them and interesting cars as we know them will die out. People in their late 20’s / 30’s now think back to the cars you drove when you were younger and I bet a lot of them were OTT spoilered up hatch’s with big sound systems and loud exhausts and then you moved onto the performance side of things when insurance dropped. If the youngsters of today are driving 2 year old standard cars, they will more than likely move onto a diesel Golf / Vectra next and stay in and around that category for years to come. Call me a cynic but IMO that is what will happen.

Which is a little like saying that some seagulls show an enthusiasm for cars by taking a dump on the bonnet.6potdave said:

No it doesn't.They are either looking to "stand out" or to "conform" with their mates it might have been with clothes last year, hairstyles the year before.
If they were into cars as such then they wouldn't weigh them down with tons of fibreglass, add heavy wheels and stereo systems.
I'll happily talk to a kid who is trying to improve his 1.0 Corsa but have nothing in common with someone who is spending thousands making his slower.
I used to buy Max Power every month since collage, June 98 right up to the last one. When I first started reading it I thought it was great and entertaining. The last couple of years it went right down hill, I still bought it out of habit. In a way I could see the end coming. The cars were just Pimp My Ride wannabes, the cars that got me interested in the magazine (and cars in general) are now found in Fast Ford, Banzai etc. Max power live was fun, went to that a few times (somewhere I'e got a picture of me felling up Jordan before she got famous).
I'm trying to think of the last time I saw a "hot hatch" with an oversized milltek, peco or magnex exhaust.
I admit I was well into modifying cars when I was younger. I was the first in the country to sport a "combat kit" Corsa Sri...loved it to death.
Now, still into cars but prefer classics and standard performance. Have an S5 and shortly looking at getting an AC Cobra replica.
Shame the scene is dying I think.

I drove the RS Kicker, before it was "finalised in the Mag", as the journo bought it over when he came to photograph one of my cars for the mag!
And, no I wont disclose what it was, but as it was a CCC car of the year winner, as well as feturing in the other car mags including 'Street Machine' whihc was usually the domain of hot rods, it appealed to a diverse audience!!
But that RS Turbo was pretty quick, it had a 2 litre power engineering CVH with a hybrid turbo IIRC and made about 250hp. My car proved to be quicker on the unofficial test track en route to the photo shoot!! Good luck with the sale BTW.
This was the early days of the mag when home built stuff was in there, stuff painted lurid colours but built on a tight budget and normally went pretty quickly. Not so much ICE and silly heavy crap bolted onto them. After the first year, all the stuff in there was stuff built by pros, for young idiots with big bank loans who knew fk all about cars and getting them to go quickly!
