It's a mess of their own making really, not that long ago they had a range of different cars in the 944/968 and the 928 that were all different and looked different. These days the only car their designer can draw is a 911, so we have the Cayman/Boxster mini 911, Cayman 4x4 911, Carrera GT supercar 911 and Panamera luxobarge 911. They've made the 911 their ultimate thing and everything else must look like it.

(Yes I know that Astons also look similar, but at least they don't stretch it out to shapes it was never intended for... Er, Cygnet excepted hehe )

There's hope that Porsche can do different cars again now with the hybrid 918 spyder concept, hopefully they'll relax about the 911.

I'm fairly certain that if they had a turbo cayman 'GT' with 400hp to compete at that mid level area of the market it would not damage its reputation. It would probably get a lot of press, move it a step beyond the bracket of cars like the Audi TT and improve the image, therefore also the sales of the whole cayman range.

The 944 turbo didn't hurt 911 sales in the 80's and yet it was reviewed by magazines as being faster than the 911 turbo at the time!
Yes but didn't Porsche nearly go bust in the early 90's? and wasn't that as a result of that model strategy? Rather than from playing with contracts for difference or whatever got them in hot water recently. biggrin

If they had a 400bhp Turbo Cayman it would take sales from the 911 Carrera.

And a Boxster and Cayman are already a step beyond an Audi TT IMHO.

As a driving experience yes, but if I was on the way to the Porsche dealership for a Boxter/Cayman with my wallet burning a hole in my pocket I would have to stop off and take the TT for a test drive. Its a well made car and that 2.0t engine is a fantastic piece of work in terms of power/economy ratio, especially with a chip! Seriously have you been in one, I've driven a chipped S3 (same engine) and it's quite scary just how quick it actually is.

..But put a Turbo cayman at the price of a fully specced Audi (note: the Audi options list is a long list!) and nothing else would even cross my mind. (ok so in the real world I'm probably going to go for a 2nd hand GT2/GT3 at £60k but theoretically - and in fact I may even test drive one for the pleasurable idea of having a car from new)

p.s. Looking at the way the 944 is made in comparison to the 911 of 20 years later and comparing it to what I'm currently studying about cost effective manufcture its not hard to see why Porsche was struggling back then and has since turned a huge profit. For the end user its a pity in some ways its changed but the 'quality of engineering before all else' attitude that Porsche had in the 80's could never have lasted.

There has been a drop in quality, but it must be said the way the production is thought out now with the maximum number of interchangable parts between models is pure genious. That and the shift in image have made an impressive business case for Porsche. I just hope the ballance isn't starting to shift too far away from quality towards cost efficiency because as Mercedes discovered that is a short term gain. Their reputation, sales and 2nd hand values have taken the best part of 20 years to turn back around.

Ha ha knew it, you would buy a 911! hehe

So Porsche have to make a turbo Cayman so people can test drive one say how great it is on here then go off and get a secondhand GT3. biggrin

Only joshing BTW.

Really? 3mins in.

p.s. Will - I know.. I've only ever bought one car new, I just don't see the point but at least they'd tempt me. You never know, if it was a good salesman on the right day;)

coloured wheel center caps included in Cayman R as standard

black leather interior standard too .. at least that is the case on UK configurator.

If true, makes it better value than standard Cayman S

Oh agree entirely. But one is a reality and the other, however possible, is highly unlikely to ever happen.

Agree

But a Cayman RS would be perfect.

Giving it the full RS treatment in the mould of 964 & 993 would mean an expensive car but it would be an amazing sports car.

Wonder how it would perform in GT3 and GT4 classes?!?

Now that is one way they could get a fast Cayman out there, 911 as GT1 and GT2 cars, Cayman as GT3 and GT4. With road versions of the Caymans as they do with the 911.

Give it up lads it's not going to happen.

Just put your own money where your mouth is and get a specialist to drop a GT3 engine in one for you.

Then we can stop all the whinging. biggrin
