Loving the stereotypical reliability comments
I don't disagree with you, but I wrote the piece from memory of my mates cars back in the 90's. They must have been unlucky (or mechanically insensitive) as they were always breaking down.....apart from a chap with a late Raider, that was reliable. I owned 2 many moons ago. One was heavily modified and went like stink and was ultra reliable...until some git stole it.
The 2nd car i had blew is gear box, but that was the only issue.
Electrics in the engine bay could be a problem, usually due to getting burnt on hot exhaust/turbo etc, so just a couple of mins with tie wraps does the trick and fitting a switch to run the fan manually was also a must. But the engines themselves from my experience proved to be very hardy units

In the end was running 35psi or just under 2.5bar of boost and really did go well.
I'd expect it to run rather well with that kind of boooooooost!!!My friends was mildy tuned with the front-mount intercooler, boost upgrade, exhaust etc and at just over 1 bar of boost was running in the 14's standing 1/4.
A friend of mine has a concours example of one of these in a very '80s shade of red that he treats with the same care and reverence the average collector reserves for something like an Austin-Healey 3000. I can see why - one of the fastest cars for the money, great competition pedigree, wonderful to drive, and thanks to the aforementioned Lax Power, rare as rocking-horse st in a decent condition nowadays. As a result, his is valued at £5000.
£1000 for this is an absolute bargain if it's treated the way my mate looks after and cherishes his. OK, so a few rusty bits to see to, but grind them down, re-fill, paint and polish them and keep the car stored in the way you would any classic car prone to rusting, and the value may well reward you - have you seen the prices being fetched for concours VW Golf GTI Mk1 and Peugeot 205 GTi? Well these were considered the third jewell in the hot hatch crown back then.
At a grand this shed looks well worth it.
