How do you remap a mechanical carb?
laugh Love it when people talk about 'chipped' Renault 5's.
You can change the AEI unit to one from a R9 or 11 Turbo for a couple of degrees extra advance but thats it.

Ive had one or two of these but only to sell on. I do still have a 9Turbo though and i'd never part with it, ever.
Great little motors save for the flimsy build and the fact you have to dislocate your hips to drive it if you're over 5'6" smile
I rapidly discovered that the 21 Turbo gave the same experience as the GTT but everything was magnified about three times over. Much much better cars.

Anyone who does a HG on one of these engines though deserves it. You look after it right (and yes, I understand that requires a bit of specialist knowledge) and they are absolutely rock solid engines....same goes for the 21 Turbo.
Isn't it funny how the rapid Renault hatch lovers progress onto the bigger rapid Renault saloons! I sold my 11 Turbo for a phase 2 21 Turbo (sadly, not a Quadra) and oh my, that thing absolutely flew. Two cars I still miss today, 17/18 years later.
Where have all the 21's gone? Were they not that popular new or have they all been cannibalised?

Time to come out of lurk mode and show some love for the R5GTT. I've owned a couple in the past and I've been imagining a project in my head for years now. The cars I have had since aren't going to excite anyone tbh (Ford Puma and a Cooper S) and I probably get a little bit too excited on the rare occasion I see a GT turbo in the wild.

The first one I owned was standard looking and never missed a beat. It was a great introduction to the car I had wanted for so long. The second one was barry'd but I soon forgot about the looks when the seller took me out for a drive. I almost shat. My ownership with it didn't last very long when I realised I was too embarrased to drive it anywhere. I even had a Gordini turbo at one point.

That's enough rambling from me. Hopefully I can find a decent example next year and return to rtoc.org.

I don't recall exactly, but wasn't it an overboost setting basically?

There were plenty of people who used to adjust the turbo accuator rod (or something like that, it was a long time ago) and claim more power - No idea if it worked, MORE power in a 5GTT was a bit pointless, you'd not get from A to B any quicker because you'd go via F, K and Z on the way! smile

Great buy.

I remember having a lift in one of these in my youth and it felt very quick, unfortuntaely the car ended up mounting a curb flying across a front garden and hitting the porch of a house! To find an almost standard one must be difficult.

Think the phase 2 cars looked better, but it was a pealescent white phase 1 that first attracted my attention to the 21 Turbo. Got a hell of a lot of kit and go for not much outlay.

Have you done a SOTW for the 21 before? I seem to recall you did.

Is the one in the classic cars for sale link above a Quadra? Just wondering why it has a N-S engine arrangement.

Probably 'cos it was designed for AWD. All the Torsen front-engined Audis have Longitudinal FWD brethren.

Great Shed, brought back loads of good memories from the early 90's.

Does anyone remember the R5 GTT 'Raider'. I recall they were a special edition in petrol blue with full leather. A mate of mine had a spotless one, until it got fleeced! (which I think seemed fairly normal at the time).

I had a Raider, and I loved it.

In my fantasy barn, there's a mint one of these for London driving.
