Always wanted a R5GTT but was one of the 205GTI brigade, then just before I got too old I bought this smile uprated turbo and running approx 180bhp

Now living in pieces on a drive not too far from me, shame really as it was immaculate when I sold it on
Shame about the wheels and dodgy bumpers though. These cars always looked better standard.
You're not wrong, just had to scratch an itch...

But still a great car for the 12 months I had it

My mate had one about 10 years ago that was running 220bhp with 22psi of boost. He stripped it out to just 2 bucket seats as well to make it even lighter. I remember quite clearly and will never forget the look of shock/horror/confusement of the TVR Griffith drivers face as we overtook him going over the M11 flyover at Cambridge with the rear end of the TVR squatting down and sliding all over the place and us torque steering and wheel spinning past him. He did spend about £10k on it though to get that power, sort of reliably...

There's a couple of guys had them doing 11 and 12 second quarters when I was involved with RTOC, another who pushed his lump (1397cc OHV pushrod dont forget) to 8000rpm and beyond.

Nuttier than squirrel st.

Two of my old ones

first was my everyday car running variable boost between 10-35 psi, hybrid turbo, grp A carb, alloy intercooler etc etc etc, pic taken from the back due to a questionable choice of front grill!, oh well we were all young and stupid once.

second was a black car I bought to swop the hybrid and SS exhaust it had with the standard parts on the white car

Just seen this thread and almost calle the guy selling the car.

I had a new one in 1989, my first company car (got in just before the end of the Maggie Boom!).

Ended up taking it with me to do a stint in Athens. Despite intense summer heat, it never hiccuped.

Finally brought it back to the UK to swap for a LHD golf with a/c.

Never forget the 2k mile drive home. Drove it pretty much flat out up through Italy, went over the top of the Alps (as apposed to Mont Blanc tunnel) and then flat out again across Switzerland and France to Calais.

And I mean flat out (speeding in Europe not much of an issue in 1991), only annoyance was frequent fuel stopping. Up the Stelvio it handled great, and was secure at high speeds.

There were a lot more to these cars than what most owners realised.

Great to see one original. IMHO most of the mods, even wheel changes, ruin the look.

Bought one of these new in 1988 (£7200 I think. E428 PJT - still around?). It was the same colour as the one in the advert "Tungsten Grey" and was one of the first of the phase2 5 GTT's in the Poole area.

On my first day of ownership, I drove from Poole to Castle Combe to watch the 5GTT's racing. Went to the pub in the centre of the village for lunch and when we came out, someone had put a fair size parking ding in the passenger door. I'd had it less than 4hrs!

It suffered several clutch cable failures (as mentioned previously). The first time it snapped, the dealer (Brian Whitesides) sent out their low-loader to collect it. They hadn't collected one before and connected the winch cable to the front. As it was winched on, the front spoiler caught and the bottom 3 inched splintered off!

The other thing I remember was we kept getting people ringing our doorbell to tell us the car was making a funny noise. I had to explain to 4 or 5 people, that it was the turbo fan that continued to run after we got in.

Got me into trouble once too. I'd just left a village and drove onto a dual-carriageway. I noticed a blue Granada behind and being flash (and naive) floored it and left him behind. About 5 miles up the road, once I was in traffic on a single carriageway, the blue Granada caught back up - with blue lights flashing in the grill. He gave me a standard SP30 but said he knew I'd gone much faster as he'd not been able to keep up! I got rid of it soon afterwards as I realised my licence wasn't going to last if I kept it.

Shentodj

From DVLA check:

The vehicle details for E428 PJT are:

Date of Liability 01 05 1992
Date of First Registration 22 04 1988
Year of Manufacture 1988
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1397CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour GREY

Looks as if met a premature end in 1992..

I had one of these back in the late 80s'. The boost had been turned up so much that the acceleration eventually snapped the seat mounting brackets. Happy days! Now I'm reduced to 380bhp WRX STi Ras'

Back in the day i had two of these im 40 now but absolutely loved them I was 22 at the time of my first one

And 24 with this one which was my radier which i moddifeid and appreared in max power revs and fast car (you laugh but at 24 that was an accolade)

I love these cars they had so much character and despite all the supposed problem if well looked after they went like i dream no headgasket overheating or any other type of problems for me my only expensce apart from the mods were the fuel and insurance if i were closer to surrey that car would now be sitting along side my other retro turbo this.....

Bring back cars with character thats what i say there all the same nowadays...

That's a worthwhile point - are there any cars out there these days accessible to young drivers that are genuinely capable of scaring them stless?

i have had 4 renault 5 gt's all phase 2s the best cars i have ever owned just sold my phase 2 tungy as it was well rotten as alot of them are and pick up my first ever phase 1.5 on friday completley standard apart from the recesses in the bumpers cut out. cant wait to collect i will always own a renault 5 gt turbo no other car makes you smile the way these cars can. everywhere you go somebody stops and asks about it constantley get asked if i am selling it. and love it when people say things like i had the raider 1.7 turbo ermmmmm yeah ok the best one i heard recentley was oh i had one a few years back and bored it out to a 2 litre laughed a drove off. if you can find a good own now snap it up as these things are going to be very rare soon and can only go up in value.

I had 7 5 turbo's, starting with a 1988 E plate phase 2 car bought almost new which was totally standard. I had a Manta GTE at the same time and the Renault just felt light years more modern in terms of handling and performance. I also had a Radbourne Racing phase 2 tuned car as a company car in 1991 which I loved to bits, it had circa 180 bhp, strut brace and devil exhaust and a rare factory electric sunroof. I ran a number of 205 GTI's over the same period including 2 Turbo Technics Dimma's but the Reggie was always my favourite, great cars!
