I've been a JCB fan too, not fond of CATerpillar though...too much controversy with them.
JCB don't have the breadth of range that CAT have (JCB excavators only go up to 50 odd tonnes, whereas CAT have just bought Bucyrus Eirie, which do mahoosive 1,000t plus mining machines) and, on some ranges, they don't have the quality either, although to be fair, CAT quality is not universal across all models/types of plant.

JCB tracked excavators - the 13 to 45 tonners - are world class, and the telehandlers are pretty good but some of the other model ranges aren't as good.

IMHO Kubota and Takeuchi both make better mini diggers than either CAT or JCB.

JCB himself, Jo Bamford snr was a legend. Digga snr was lucky enough to have been excavator sales manager there while JCB was still around, albeit on a drop-in every now and then basis, but he still knew and spoke to most of the faces in and around the factory. He wasn't just a great engineer and entrepreneur.

Do Terex still use the MF chassis?
i couldn't use a JCB as the levers for the backhoe are opposite to MF/Fermec/Terex

It's a marketing ploy to get people to talk about their products. And they've done it! Woo!

''So, for your £47,500 not only do you get 325lb ft of torque, a bucket volume of 1.3 cubic metres and a lift capacity of 4638kg, but you also get the capacity to make a brew while you're at it. Try doing that in a nearly new BMW M3...''

But you'd get to Costa faster in the M3!

yes, Terex own what was Fermec, formerly MF industrial.

JCB 3CX levers are different to other excavators; they have an "x" shift pattern, as opposed to the more common "+" pattern, and IIRC have different functions on different 'hands'.

My two year old son loves diggers, this news will make his Christmas!
If you haven't already, get him a Bruder digger for xmas. Got my 2yr old son the Excavator a couple of months back and he absolutely loves it. It's massive and virtually indestructible.
...or take him to DiggerLand!

The concept of having the ability to brew up in your digger is actaully as old as the 3C itself as Joe Bamford him presented a 12v kettle to the purchasers of the first 100 when they came out.

However I do agree that yet again, Its a cracking bit of well crafted promotional work on JCBs behalf.

The modern backhoes now come with the option of switching between both configurations.

The "+" pattern was an option on the 3CX or so it said in the service manual on mine.
