My old man got a 520i Tourer in 1994. Manual though.

Whilst not a rocket, that straight 6 was an absolute peach, and as a student at the time, getting to drive round in it was great!

It is a real shame the accountants at BMW have dropped the straight 6 2.0 in favour of the current 4 cylinder offering. For a company that makes some spankingly good engines, the current 4 pot 2.0 petrol engine is a disgrace.

Had one of these as a Le Mans barge for 2 "seasons". Sold it at 270,000 odd miles. Was still going strong (all be it with some odd clunks every now and then).

Drank fuel like it was going out of fashion, great car though.

Great SOTW, I also love E34's, my first was a 518i and you think a 520 is slow!

Needs to be a 525i at least, and surely it's under a grand for a car with a bulging folder of receipts? Nice though.

Always thought these were very handsome cars.. very few good ones left though. For me it would have to have the superb 2.5 lump.. the 2 litre is just not gutsy enough for this big beast.. well done shed, back on form after the MGF!!

I just bought this beauty:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2266976.htm

Ok, it's not a touring but it's in nice condition, not too many miles, large service history and every mot it's ever had.

Oh and I got a good deal too...

Nice car, wrong engine. At shed money I'd take a 525tds, but I can't see that two-litre having enough torque to haul a big estate like that without returning horrendous fuel consumption, and given that you'd buy it for practicality and as an everyday hack while you kept your P&J/Bike for the weekends, it does seem to shoot itself in the foot.

Never seen one of these at that price without serious rust problems either, and as a previous poster said, 'selling for a friend' is never a good sign either.

Good idea, not such a good shed methinks.

Great work horse for the winter, it would take an age to clean the wheels though!

However I would be tempted by a S124 E class for the same money.

I do love the E34. I had a 1995 manual 525i Sport. My favourite car I have had.

There was a very nice full history 1 owner 110k 525ix touring for sale on here about 2 months ago. £850. I thought it would make a great winter barge but it sold before I got my a**e in gear to buy it. OK as long as none of the unique parts need replacing.

Missed opportunity or close shave? I will never know......

As per my previous post, sold ours last year at circa 270,000, no rust. Very solid body all round actually, which was good smile

These E34s tend to have rust mainly around the fuel filler cap, rear arches, rear number plate surround. This is rust free.

They are generally solid cars, and don't rot in the way a Jag XJ can...

Firstly, Vanos does not 'Kick in'. The point of Vanos is that the BMW 6 is quite cammy and is not renowned for its low down power. Vanos tries to overcome that a little.

32mpg? I had the M50 in a manual 3-series and the best you could expect was around 28mpg. Add another 1/3 of a tonne and auto, I so doubt you'll get close.

It's okay for what it is though - I'm not hating it or anything
