Small engine, auto box, high mileage, cloth seats AND missing paperwork?

You can keep this one.

Firstly, Vanos does not 'Kick in'. The point of Vanos is that the BMW 6 is quite cammy and is not renowned for its low down power. Vanos tries to overcome that a little.

32mpg? I had the M50 in a manual 3-series and the best you could expect was around 28mpg. Add another 1/3 of a tonne and auto, I so doubt you'll get close.
In mine, the noise changed and something definately "kicked in" at 4,000 rpm. Different to both the M20 and the M54's I have had. I always put that down to the vanos. Agree that 32mpg in a 520 auto touring would be a suprise. I got just shy of 30mpg in the 525 manual saloon.

Hello everyone.

Thanks for the positive (and negative) comments.

I AM selling this car on behalf of my friend, who HAS purchased a 1968 Camper for restoration.

For the money, she is a good car. Mechanically it's 100%, and has not rust or rot anywhere. Just has the lacquer peeling on the NSF wing and on the bonnet.

Other than that, everything works asd it should, and it does what it says on the tin. Everything feels tight and solid.

Yes the 2.0 litre six-pot not the quickest engine in the world, but she happily sits at 70mph on the Motorway. Most people will buy this as a workhorse, for which it is ideal, and not for their main pride and joy car.

Regarding the Logbook - if you buy a car, then decide to sell it within a few weeks, the Logbook will not always be returned from the DVLA will it? This is why I have stated that a receipt will be given, and the Logbook will be sent off as soon as it arrives. Nothing dubious about this - I have waited 2 months for a Logbook before, so I don't want to make promises that the Logbook will be here by the time the car sells.

Nice car but i've been frightened off the 150bhp 2.0 straight six. They have a growing reputation for porous heads and having tried to help source a replacement recently (for my brother's early E39) i've been shocked how many are being advertised with 'minor' overheating problems, or on their second engine, or up as spares or repairs. Some independents won't repair them either.

Thanks for the explanation on the Vanos - I am not very mechanically minded, so just put it down how I thought it worked!

Regarding the economy, when we did a long, round trip, we did manage 32mpg average over the whole journey. Being an auto, it sits at very low revs when cruising on the motorway, so that's where the difference in economy comes in. Yes, around town the economy won;t be too clever, as it is a heavy car...

Never seen one of these at that price without serious rust problems either
As per my previous post, sold ours last year at circa 270,000, no rust. Very solid body all round actually, which was good smile
How much for though? I was talking shed money.
£650 smile

Lovely cars - I used to own an '89 Alpine White II 535i Sport. Good engines on those. These are going up in value now...

The M54 has double Vanos (Inlet and Exhaust) where as the M50 has the very early Single Vanos.
These engines naturally come on 'cam' around that area of the rev range. Having the double vanos going on will no doubt impact that too.

Fair play mate. smile My Manual 3-Series did have a low 5th which meant the revs were unnecessarily high on a cruise. 5-Series is quite aerodynamic for its age too.

It's HellRot in German, which translates to bright red.
Was just about to post the same - "bright" or "light"* depending on the context. Still a good colour, and wouldn't be a bad shed if it wasn't for the self-shifter...

* 'Leicht' refers specifically to weight, not to colour.

Did SOTW miss out on some topical shedding in the last couple of weeks? It would have been nice to have seen a selection of 4WD sheds on offer (i'm thinking Forester, Jeep, early 90s Audis, poss XR4x4),rather than a convertible and a rear wheel drive auto!...

Wrong colour on your opinion, but most have taken a liking to it! And, it's different, compared to the usual colours they appear in...

Lovely car! Still think the E34 is the best-looking 5-Series to date, too.

Yes! Definitely has more character than the newer 5 series estates.

I do like these, but I'd just feel disloyal to Benz if I bought one.

Looks very tidy though yes
