Why are diesel drivers the ones TRYING to prove things!

I dunno, I just came back from a 200 mile round trip, and had a giggle on the many crawler lanes and 2 lane roundabout exits. In a diesel.
OK, it was a 2.5 V6 diesel, and did sound quite nice heading towards the higher end of the rev range, so it'd have been rude not to. I only managed 29.5mpg average across 200 miles.

It's because I drive a Golf and it is, without a doubt, the most versatile car on the road - forget about your 1 series and other cars, it's the only car to have.
My 140bhp gives me hundreds of torque-meters and if I'm not driving it to use all of them, then I'm wasting all that german engineering that has gone in to creating what is, without a shadow of doubt, one of the finest, best evolved, hatchbacks on the road.

I suspect its because the company car of choice is a 2.0TDi. I have had people try to race me on the road but they've either got a 1.2 corsa with a huge bodykit and a bean tin exhaust, or they are nutters. I don't tend to take the bait.
It was particularly bad when I had my MR2 or my Subaru. It doesn't tend to happen as much in the 130i, although a guy in a C class did try it on the other day. I just let him go, its not worth the resulting accident.

This means that guy in C-Class Derv beats your Scooby, therefore a C-Class would be faster (even on a forestry stage)
When I had my various TDI's, I would sometimes race for the heck of it and hope to see some crazy performance. If I lost I could comfort myself in knowing I lost doing 45mpg.
The most amazing baiting I did was actually a highly modified Corrado as it happens. When he finally kicked off, I don't think to this day I saw anything move so quickly. I could hear turbos spool up briefly and then he was gone. Still smile about that one now.

Nobody ever tries to 'take me on' I do find that a lot of people driving too fast for the conditions are often TDi drivers, not sure they're trying to take anyone on though, just more likely that they're in a rush or not bothered about the fuel in their company car.
when i had a Vectra 1.9 Cdti in the luxurious 'Life' model spec as a company car i typically drove that a lot faster than i drive my 986/Z4/172 on motorways etc as i was usually travelling a long distance, wasn't paying for the fuel and just wanted to get to my destination ASAP
try not to take it personally if you get tailgated, if and when you can either move over or they overtake you'll watch them just on the bumper of the car in front and they'll probably be a lot more stressed than you are just bimbling along

Must say I experienced surprisingly little of this when I had my Evo IX, despite everyone telling me every Saxo driving, becapped tosspot would try and race me. It happened every now and again, but not often.The 997 appears to attract it quite a bit, after 2 weeks I've already had a lot of goons tailgating me in it seemingly trying to goad me on. It happens quite often in the GTS as well actually, which you wouldn't expect as it's an old car... perhaps they fancy their chances so they can say they've beaten a Porsche, even if it is a 15 year old one!

Do not get it in my missus car, or when I drive the Mk1.

I've never had any one try and take me on.... and I drive a bloody BMW. Are you sure you're not just feeling a bit 'little' when someone happens to be going faster than you?
If they are going faster than you on a motorway or duel carriage just let them past, they aren't racing, just overtaking.
On average I'd say I drive a lot quicker in my diesel's than the petrols, you dont feel guilty & dont have to keep stopping every 250 miles! £35 every 400 miles isn't as painful as £80 every 250miles Unless I'm in the landcruiser towing then its £120 every 400 miles
I really quite enjoy driving diesels, love the torque for acceleration without the pain in the £'s you'd get with a petrol & because your not thrashing it it does'nt seem like your going that quick. So all those people who appear to be racing you are just bumbling along normally
And yes I have a 500bhp straight 6, petrol, huge turbo monster in the garage for weekend fun, that I also enjoy

I would not mind if it was anything interesting wanting to fly past like the wail of a nice V10 Lambo or something!

Whereas you on the other hand know exactly what is going on in the other car that wants to make quicker progress than you? I'm not suggesting that tailgating is something to be admired, however somebody making a quicker getaway from the traffic lights is not necessarily racing and perhaps points to you having a bit of a chip on your shoulder about being overtaken? I would suggest a window sticker stating "less than 10 cylinders don't even think about it you clown" would be a lovely addition to your current chariot.
