Interesting conudrum.

Having not had the chance to sample either, I'm going to go with what I like in a car and how they make me feel.

On the basis of that, I'd be going to Hethel. From where I stand, I reckon the Exige would be the more "special" car, if you know what I mean?

That's not to shy away from the fact that the CSL is a VERY special car indeed - it absolutely is, however the Exige would feel more special to me.

Hmm that doesn't make much sense, does it?

Way I see it GP, you've already got the CSL, if you want to scratch the itch, move it on and get into an Exige. If you play your cards right, you could even do a swap back to a CSL again without having lost much, if anything.

Hey haud the bus

Just nipped into the classifieds there - I didn't realise the roof was removable on the Exige?

As per - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2094804.htm

That being so, I say Exige - most definitely.

I've had my Exige S for just under 2 months now, after having to make the same sort of decision. Balls to practicality, I can live with it on a daily basis, and I've been loving it so far.

If you can, then I thoroughly recommend it.

Having owned the lotus I'd go for the M3 every time!

How about a Noble?
Good shout but I need something in warranty that is also reliable. I can't have either with a Noble.

GP don't let your previous experience put you off.

Having read your posts on here I think that you KNOW where you need to go next.

Give it another chance, but get a straight one this time...
The last one raped me hard enough to send me back into the fiscal dark ages. It'll be a while before I can afford another.

Otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I was about to post EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

Great minds and all that.

Lovely, but it wouldn't pull a sailor off your sister.

And speaking of backward steps...

I don't understand the "backwards step" thing - is there a hierarchy of cars that are "forward steps" and others that aren't? Don't people just buy the car that best fits their requirements and desires at the time?

How do people decide what is a backwards step and why is it important?

The French are going crazy for S1 Exiges, as I said I narrowly beat one guy but there were another two guys who were enquiring about it. Its all good though for us owners, with so many going abroad and being converted to LHD, and others going into collections, prices are going up up up...

CSL. I'm slightly biased though, I can't fit in a Lotus, so have therefore never been out in one.....I think you'd be fed up of the Lotus after 6 months, and you'll just be harking for something with a bit more substance....The Lotus, whilst fun, I feel would be a backward step
But you've just said you've never been in one, which makes your follow up comments something of a fallacy. Backward step? I know of a Ferrari and a Porsche owner who preferred driving an S2 Exige.

The CSL is the better all rounder - but for for pure, filtered driving enjoyment, Exige everytime.

Without wishing to derail the thread too much, but you've got the M5, right?

So why not shift the CSL, and get into an R500 or Atom? M5 plus one of those would be a near perfect combination I reckon.

(I'm saying this because that's what I'd do...)

Friend Adrian has the Exige S S2, turned up to 290bhp, running on semi's.. boy its quick...but its a bugger to get in and out and taking it to track days requires lots of headache tablets...

Third gear went on it now replaced, doubt that would happen on the BM. Plus im sure he did tell me that on the Exige forum there was a general agreement by the majority that the car exige owners missed the most was an M3 CSL....think from ownership experience....

M3 CSL......

It sounds daft but neither the Caterham nor the Atom really turn me on. Both are surely excellent steers, but for some reason I like my cars to have doors.

Not a great deal more than the CSL is worth. So about £25k(ish)
