My top 4 are as follows

Bought a 99 E39 M5 in Autumn 2003 , for £25k , sold Jan 05 for £17k

Closely followed by a 2001 X5 , Summer 06 cost £15k , sold Dec 08 for a shade over £7k

The only other 2 losses that stand out were £3k loss on a CLK over about 1yr and similar lost on a new Clio 182 over a 1 yr period.

I know I'll get flamed for even thinking this but with the soaring cost of fuel and very little opportunity to actually enjoy a sports car on the road today ( cameras , congestion etc ) I'm thinking of getting a new 1.6d Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30 as the family car / daily driver and just keeping it until it dies , or the 7 yr warranty expires , whichever comes first. 60+mpg , low tax etc etc , fixed running costs due to the warranty .

I'll still have the bike for the speed / adrenaline fix and possibly consider a weekend toy, E36 M3 or similar to keep long term where depreciation won't really be an issue

Not too sure about the maths, but can't imagine that 6k in todays money is a lot more than 2k in 1980...
Wantwantwantwant a montecarlo though, very nice.
£2000 in 1980 is £6400 now, -£400.

sorry that was 2005, so was £2000 was about £5800, + £200

My 1999 E39 528 bought in October 2008 for £3400, now worth £900 and I've taken it from 107k to 131k. Perhaps it's worth my while holding on to her, she's a tough old barge.

One of my worst ever mistakes was a 2005 Mondeo ST TDCi. Bought for £6,700 in November 2009, spent £1200 on a clutch in December 2009, part ex'd for £4,500 in April 2010.

£3,400 loss on a 5 year old Mondeo in 5 months. Mint.

To make up for the pain I swapped her for an Approved Used Z4 and have lost a similar amount, but it's a far nicer car to lose the money on!!

mk.2 Golf GTi, bought for £840, about £400 in repairs, another £350 to get a new MOT on it and then sold it for £400. Nothing compared to a lot of people but a lot of money to me

I did just short of 6k in just under six months on a brand new B7 RS4 Avant, that was not nice but could have been worse I bailed out of mine just as they took a proper nose dive, a mate of mine bought a saloon RS4 at the same time (new) he kept his just 3 months longer and got stung for about 12k he bailed when they were properly upside down (that makes me feel a bit better!)

2007 BMW 330d Touring, Oct 2010-Dec 2010, bought £20000 sold £17000, not a great moment, but I had to sell it as I lost my overtime which paid the car.

That's the biggest loss in the shortest space of time for me, it's also been a sharp learning curve, I'm never buying a car above £10k again, and it's not being financed

I bought a new M3 for 57K in 2003.

At just under 3 years old I got 23K for it.

So that's 34K in 35 months.

Admittedly, it had over 60K on the clock, but still....

Was the last car I reckon I'll ever buy new; I cannot bear the thought of the total running cost calculation.

Still makes me shudder thinking about it.

Never again.
Quite a loss! What kind of spec did you want for it to cost £57k??

I think the moral of the story is this. If you're going to buy new, you better be damn sure you want that car for atleast 10 years!

Think I've only lost £1000 at most over a year - but that was on my Impreza and I was sadder to get rid of it than I was bothered about losing a few quid.

My Mum isn't interested in cars and, against my advice, bought herself a brand new Micra a few years ago. Paid slightly over list price(!) as "they'd stopped making these but we got some in just because they were so good" (i.e. they overmade some and had to reregister after the new shape came out - it's a K11 on an 03 plate). It's now worth less than £2,000. And she's only done 12,000 miles in it. Almost 70p a mile in depreciation alone.

My 730d cost 27 grand three years ago. Planning to keep it for another two years by which point it'll be worth around 10 grand. So 17 grand in five years, and around 90,000 miles of motoring which I don't think is too bad actually.

I lost just under £30k over a year on a V8 Vantage, but I did put the best part of 40,000 miles on it in the year. I usually expect to drop £15-£20k a year on depreciation but I spend a lot of time in my car and do a lot of miles so it matters to me that it's something decent.
