Bought my first 205gti many years ago for £1700.
Spent out a further £1100 in 1 year on repairs & after 14 months ownership, I had to scrap it.

Whilst working for my previous employer a few years ago, I sold a 2005 M5 in silver to a customer for £32000. 6 months later, the clutch went and it also needed a flywheel at the same time. The BMW AUC warranty wouldn't cover the cost as he had remapped the car since purchasing it. He had an eyewatering bill for that, but to top it off, we had a black M5 in stock whilst replacing his clutch. The guy tentatively enquired 'how much to change my car for the black one?' as this was his original colour preference.

I had to break the news to him how much his car has depreciated in 6 months - now worth £24000 yikes - I now know how the old bill feel when they have to tell someone a family member has passed away... I ended up giving the guy a cheque for £10000 and a 2002 330Ci Sport Cab as he was terrified of losing even more cash on his M5.

I bought a new M3 for 57K in 2003.

At just under 3 years old I got 23K for it.

So that's 34K in 35 months.

Admittedly, it had over 60K on the clock, but still....

Was the last car I reckon I'll ever buy new; I cannot bear the thought of the total running cost calculation.

Still makes me shudder thinking about it.

Never again.
Quite a loss! What kind of spec did you want for it to cost £57k??
Well, I was only a kid so it had SMG and every single option on the list bar ski-through-load thingy ( it was incompatible with some option or other; can't remember which one now).

Plus full Schnitzer exterior, exhaust, back box, spoiler, internal trimmings etc and fully tinted windows.

£24K on my 996 C2 Cab over 3.5 years.

Have made money 3 times though (twice in the US):

Subaru Impreza RS Coupe - bought for $14K and sold 16 months and 12K miles later for $14.5K

Chevrolet Blazer - bought for $10,250, sold 8 months later for $10,750

And in the UK, 306 XSi - bought for £400, sold 9 weeks and 4K miles later for £500

My neighbour is has got a C class AMG thing, 6.2 litres he picked it up today and its an 08, he has part exed his M3 cab which is about 3 years old. He was telling me last night of a client of his who bought a new C class AMG and part exed it a year later to the same dealer and lost £19k, and it had cost him £500 a month in finance. So £25k in a year.

I seem to have lost about £200 a month on the more expensive cars (20k ish) but I have only ever owned two such cars, both Z4s, a 3.0i and an M, both three years old when purchased.

Bought a Z3 for £6k and sold for £7.4k a couple of months later after deciding the steptronic was a bit crap and in a roll on against my 118d (chipped) it couldn't make any ground between 0.6 and 1.05 leptons (believe it or not). Good profit but unfortunately this was followed by my worst loss which was £1.5k in a couple of months on a Z3M which I bought in haste and sold in haste! (don't ask). Ended up breaking even I suppose.

Private buys and sells above.

The only time I purchased from a dealer I lost about £3k in 12 months; a 2001 Trans Am WS6 bought for $23k and sold for $17.5k.

Think I've only lost £1000 at most over a year - but that was on my Impreza and I was sadder to get rid of it than I was bothered about losing a few quid.

My Mum isn't interested in cars and, against my advice, bought herself a brand new Micra a few years ago. Paid slightly over list price(!) as "they'd stopped making these but we got some in just because they were so good" (i.e. they overmade some and had to reregister after the new shape came out - it's a K11 on an 03 plate). It's now worth less than £2,000. And she's only done 12,000 miles in it. Almost 70p a mile in depreciation alone.
If that Micra is in decent condition with proof of mileage/service history its worth more than that, I sold a base model 02 plate with the same miles but no real service history for £2750 last year and could have sold it several times over.

That sounds like an even worse move, essentially 22k for a 2002 330Ci Convertible. Bargain. Not

Back in the day when I was really skint:

I lost 1 x Fiat Panda and £200 in one day.
I stupidly bought a car unseen off my mates dad. For £100. A classic 10yr old Cavalier with a FVSH and 100k. MOT needed doing in 7 days.

It was a 500 mile round trip.
I drove down in my worthless (but working) panda, scrapped it at the local scrapyard.
Picked up the new Cavalier and headed back home. It drove perfectly, yippee.
Next day MOT'd it and needed £1000 worth of welding, so scrapped it same day.
bks.

I should have paid my mates dad to do the MOT and see what happened. Lesson learned.

Just the ones I remember...

fabia vrs bought for 12500, owned 12 months, sold for 10250 = -2250
golf gti bought for 950, owned 4 months, sold for 375 = -575
Clio 182 bought for 10750, owned 18 months, sold for 6800 = -3950
integra type-r bought for 7600, owned 26 months, sold for 4000 = -3600
Eunos roadster bought for 3400, owned for 17 months, sold for 2200 = -1200

Total = -11575

Which is about the size of my debt. This time round I've got a very tidy 328i sport for 1800 quid so I doubt the loss on this one will be anywhere near as painful!

Biggest loss of ever had was My vectra, The most expensive car i've bought to date at a whopping £500 ran it for just over 20k miles and sold it for £450 smile

I did lose £20 on my proton mind you, brought for £70 sold 15k miles later for £50 other than fuel never spent a penny on it either.
