What's The most You Have Lost On A Car?
Discussion
A ( very Rich ) mate of mine:
Bently Conti Speed 140 jan 09 90 July 10 =50k
Jag XKR 60 Feb 08 40 Jan 10 =20k
997 C2 65 March07 40 feb08 =25k
In the past 5 years betwen his and his wifes cars I reckon he has lost 170k+ on depreciation! worth as much as my pile of cars!
I think the big loosers on here wont post! I haqve heard guys speak of loosing 60k on big Ferraris in 18 months and I few I know vow never to buy new again as they feel the dealers are taking the piss out of them when it comes to trade in time.
I know old stuff costs fortumes to maintian and run and can't do what the moderns can but overall I think is less risk. People urge me to sell my old stuff and buy a modern lambo or ferrari. Not sure would be hapy at loosing 40% even on a year old car over the next 3 years!

I feel so much BETTER abou my losses for having read this thread!
Hyundai 2.0 Coupe, bought just under 3 years old in 2001 for £8250. Written off in 2007 - insurance value (and Esure were quite generous) £2400.
Honda Civic 1.6, bought at 8 years old for £2800. Within 4 months the clutch and gearbox went (cost with other bits needed about £1300!). A few months before I finally got rid, the Cat went (400 quid, stupid stupid...). All in all, I probably spent over £5k on it in 2.5 years. Traded it in when I bought my 3 year old Accord a year ago and got £200 for it...
Thankfully the Accord is showing itself to be far more reliable...

Pug 306 DTurbo - Bought in July 2005 to learn to drive in for £2200, sold the following summer for £1500, spent about £900 on it in that time. loss = £1600
Alfa 156 T Spark - Bought summer 06 for £3,000 sold early 07 for £1400, also had to spend about £500 on it as i crashed it the day i was due to sell it. loss = £2,100
BMW 320CD 2004, Bought with 65k miles for £10,000 in December 2007, traded it in with 115k miles for £4,250 in December 2009, also spent a fair few quid keeping it up to scratch but i guess that's a given doing 50k miles and stupidly having my servicing and MOT's done at BM. Loss = £5,750
Boxster 986 S, Bought in December 09 with 55k miles for £10k, now done 70K and i've spent about £2,500 on it and it's probably worth £8k. total loss so far = £4,500
not doing too well really, but i don't mind too much, i do a fair few miles and enjoy driving so i just see it as a necessary expense. I'd like to spend less money on motoring, in the same way as i'd like to spend less on pretty much everything but unfortunately very little in life is free

What?Look how much they go for, privately, with that mileage, a year later!

I must say this thread has put me right off owning an M car............
I don't think they're significantly worse than any other mainstream car of similar value. If you own a car for three years, it will typically lose around 60% of its value, almost whatever it is. If you own an expensive car for three years, that's quite a lot of money. Classic Impreza Turbo - lost about £13k over 4yrs but that was spread between my Company (original owner) & myself when I purchased it from the Company (at a fair price).
BMW 330D Touring - lost about £12k but that was over about 4yrs
Both cars were 12-18mths old when I bought them & had already depreciated but both purchased from Main Dealers.
Also lost about £6k on a motorhome I owned for about 2yrs - had a lot of fun in it though.
