I hope you don't mind me asking here, as I have a similar question. I have a plate on someone's car which was crashed the other day, it's very likely to be written off. The tax expired at the end of Feb - what's the best way to remove the plate before the insurance company take the car, and does it matter that the car's untaxed?

Take a letter from your insurance stating they have no interest in the plate, as well as all the other docs to the DVLA, fill in the forms, hand over the cash and off you go smile

Thanks. Won't the insurance company want the V5C when they collect the car?

Friend has had a car been standing on his drive for years - with a nice reg.
Not been mot'd nor taxed for years, just continually sorned.

He was on about scrapping the car but keeping the plate.
I told him the plate can't be transferred unless car has mot. Plate value he was given was quite a few hundreds.
Prospect of getting the car mobile again for a mot is too daunting and probably exceed that value.

Does he have any other way to get the plate transferred or is that the end?

Dodgy MOT centre? Plus a few beers?
Not a chance. DVLA will see from their computer how long it is since the car last had tax, mot or change of owner and will insist on inspecting the vehicle before allowing a transfer.
Assuming the number in question has not already been assigned to another vehicle and OP manages to obtain a V5 in his name ( I got caught out some years ago when I applied for a V5 for a wreck I saw in a scrapyard and ended up with V5 for someone's new Mercedes ! Sent it back with note saying it must have been misaddressed and not mine ) .

The only way might be to obtain dodgy MOT ( allow garage to destroy car if they are worried it might appear on road ) , insure car third party only ( so no prospect of claiming ) tax it for six months , then some time later for it to be 'stolen' and not recovered .

There must be a proceedure for recovering a cherished number from a stolen car , even though said car has disappeared .

I think you can contact the DVLA and ask them to put the plate in an auction if the car is officially dead. Being officially dead is the key though. My 1974 moped still comes up despite having died at least 30 years ago.
