Android phone, set to Car mode so that you can just tap it and say "Listen to *artist*" (etc) and it plays. Safer UI than using the head-unit controls.

This has to be the ultimate solution:

First Android controlled headunit uses DLNA from your phone over wifi to select/stream music.

The UI on these devices when playing music is totally unsuited to use in the car. Fiddling with your album/artists lists on them while driving is probably more dangerous than making a call with the phone to your ear.
This.
I have a selection of playlists on my phone; I just start one before driving off (or shuffle my entire library of music) & then I can advance or go back through tracks with the factory fitted steering wheel controls, all without taking my eyes off the road.

My Sansa Clip+ MP3 player cost about the same as some cables to connect an iPod to a stereo!
