was thinking there would be a simple explaination for the whine. don't know too much about these as they're fairly rare in ni. this one advertised over here seems cheap tho:

http://www.usedcarsni.com/64027030

would anyone recommend one for a bit of back-road blasting?

Excellent SOTW. Seems good value, and a very fun car to drive.

Are you having a Laugh? hehe - Complete ditch finder. Beyond sh!t. PH2 V6 only marginally more predictable.

I'm skeptical of that, sorry.

Buys it and does all that work to it, which sounds like it cost about £1k, and then puts it up for sale?

It does look very nice though.

Nice find, great little hot hatch, just a shame its French and will almost certainly be suffering or will suffer from dodgy electricals. Good for 6 months hooning or track car though then move it on

That's had a front end respray at some point.

ETA: Ofcourse, someone might have just restored it or had a little knock in it.

Some people just don't understand the value of their cars.

Mr Average would probably think £1k is too much for a 10 year old French Hatchback with nearly 120k - but yes good examples with the same mileage can be seen advertised for up to 2k

The driving position on 172's isn't perfect and the steering wheel is a bit big in my opinion, but this doesn't spoil things at all smile

Shame, you obviously know nothing about these cars. Electrics are certainly not on the list of 'known problems'

My bet is the current owner gave £3-500 for it an spent £2-300 on the head boshed it back together and now wants rid. Most likely he bought it off a mate who killed the engine and couldn't afford to repair it.

For the money its pretty good as even mk1 clio 1.8 16valves are still around the £1k mark.

I have always wanted a Clio sport.

Had a little clio 1.2 as my first proper car and have very fond memories of it.

From what I remember, this was more a problem with the ph2 172 as the airbox was a restriction. I thought ph1 cars were closer to the book figure.

I found the same, I'm 6ft and found the seats a bit high. There is an easy fix in that you can remove the seats (13mm long socket IIRC) and remove the spacers. It drops the seat around 10mm and it makes a remarkable difference, despite 'only' being 10mm.

I then replaced the steering wheel with a Sparco

From this manky piece of st...

to this (£30 second hand btw)...

here's some pictures of mine biggrin

Yes, but "Mr Average" wouldn't:
i bought the car 4 months ago with a snapped timing belt.
fitted
x16 new valves
x16 valve oil seals
full head gasket set
new head bolts
new timing belt
oil and filter
anti freeze
water pump
alternater belt
2nd hand alternater.

If he's done all that himslef, he's knows his stuff, and may well have found other issues. If he doesn't know his stuff, would you buy a car from someone who's done all of the above? (unless, of course they got a garage to do it)

Are you having a laugh?? I know enough that I will never buy another one. I've owned 3 Renaults, a Laguna, Meganne & a Clio although not the 172, but the 1.2 on a 05 plate. All had electrical issues, window switches, light internals melting dodgy rear lights so can't just be bad luck on my part......

I have a 2000 plate 172 on 110k and a 2004 Phase 2 172 on 52k both of which have ZERO electrical problems [the Phase 2 car just had it's gearbox rebuilt though!]

Average PH1 172's are only worth £1-£1.5k these days anyway, & break for roughly £2k all day long, so this ones price isnt too amazing tbh.

A 2nd hand engine costs about £250 if you can fit it yourself, & the gearbox roughly the same, so this one wont cost to much to fix if you're handy with a spanner.

Re: electrics, they're fine, cambelts/aux belts/dephasers are the biggest expense/concerns, with the gearbox giving up the ghost if you dont heal & toe, or are particularly rough/incompetent when changing gear.

Great cars. And a brilliant starter/cheap track toy. I've had 4.
