RE: SOTW: Mercedes 300 CE-24

Wouldn't worry about the miles at that price and not suprised its sold already, a perfect shed.
Parents ran a gold estate version many years ago and that thing didnt half go well for its size ( and era ), cant recall it ever really going wrong and it was pretty well abused throughout its life doing an astronomic mileage, well over 200k - before eventually getting traded in for the more modern replacement.
If i'd been old enough when it went i would have had it like a shot - it was gold metallic as well which looked fantastic IMHO.
Personally i reckon that this series of Mercs - in all forms - rank up there amongst the best ever.

These W124s really are a joy to punt around. They feel so solid and still look good today IMHO. Comfortable, quick and very smooth.
I bought mine as a winter hack, to keep the old 635 off the road and to cover some distance in comfort. It has performed brilliantly and I'll be sad to see it go. But go it must... http://pistonheads.com/sales/2448151.htm
Anyone want to give it a good home?

I am currently working on one (230 CE) as my current project !
Sadly, once finished and up for sale the budget will have exceeded way beyond 'shed' money. ETA probably 2 months if I'm lucky. Sneak 'before' pic:

A friend of mine owns one of these, had it for almost 20 years I reckon. He bought it off Graeme Souness after a Rangers match. Caused a bit of a noise as the car belonged to the club.
That's the story anyway. Lovely old bus, very solid but I think keeping one in pristine condition can be quite expensive.

Great cars....mum bought a w124 TE brand new in 1990. She still has it, it's never given any trouble and the leather could still pass for 20k. Dad got her a new s500 last summer but couldn't part with the w124 so it's now garaged as a spare car. Rarely is the phrase 'they don't build them like this anymore' quite so apt.
My w124 estate's milage has just rolled past 200k this week. Gave it a wash this morning and all thoughts of trading it dissapeared. Apart from new front wings (£330 fitted, painted, extra underseal) and a recon auto 'box (£950) it's only been routine maintainance in the 10 years of ownership. The missus often finds notes on the windscreen with offers to buy it. It owes me absolutely nothing. New cars. No thanks
Reminds me of an estate 7 seater that came up for sale at an auctions near me recently. It was left unsold for a month, even with a guide price of just £250 and circa 140k on the clock! Gone now though
Kicking myself for not getting it. Even if it had lasted a few months, the experience of classic merc ownership would have been worth every penny.

I have run a 1985 W126 500 SEL for 10 years or so, did the bodywork up/paint etc to make it look nice, paid £1200 and its now at 200k, still kraut perfection, good mpg if sensible and goes like stinky comfort on kickdown.
Dont think I could bear to part with it, also have a S500 W140 in case of problems or a change, classic car insurance is marvellous.;)

Snap, ish. I just bought a W126 560 SEL although I'm still waiting for some work to be finished on it (I had the cams checked which are spot on but thought a new chain might as well go in, it's taking longer than expected to arrive from Germany though):-Dont think I could bear to part with it, also have a S500 W140 in case of problems or a change, classic car insurance is marvellous.;)
Loving my 300CE-24V, bought it in sept last year after major employment change meant goodbye to 20+ years of company cars - but this old girl has more character than any of the things i have driven.
here she is :
I am working my way through bits and pieces to get her back to A1 condition, but for an 18 year old car with 140k on the clock the general condition is bloody good - these w124's really do have a 'carved from granite' feel to them.
another bonus for me is that they are very home mechanic friendly - nothing to complex, so having some fun tinkering on a Saturday (like being 18 again!)
just waiting for warmer weather so I can get the full 'pillarless' effect
Cheers - Tb
