the oil companies profits do increase significantly every year.
Do you even have half a clue how the oil industry works? What else apart from petrol comes from crude oil? Oh and what %age return on investment is the eleventy billion that they will make this year? The price of fuel is linked to two factors demand from more people for a finite product that is expensive to get, but the majority of the price we pay for fuel goes to the government so the supply and demand thing is as insignificant as the profits (and the effect the OP idea will have on prices).
I see you have a tvr. If you cant afford to put the petrol in it sell it and i would have thought if you had a tvr you would be able to afford the petrol. A lot of people at this time thinking they are struggling but still have the expensive cars 200,000 pound house all the goods. A lot of people lived beyond they means for to long and when somethings goes wrong they are fked because everything is on finance exc, exc. Petrol doesnt really bother me that much since ive been driving the lowest it dropped to was 1.11 so in a year it gone up 14p hardly a lot. People need to see that they cant have everything if you cant afford it dont have it
Why is it that everytime one of these 'don't buy fuel from XXXX company' goes round, it's always BP/Esso?
Does anyone else get the feeling they're started by Shell/Tesco/Sainsbury's etc?
And does anyone really believe it'll make a difference? Besides, it's the tax that makes it expensive, hardly the fault of the fuel companies

It won't work. As said above the main problem with fuel prices is the huge proportion of tax on each litre! The only way of protesting against this is for everyone to not use their cars for a week which will have a huge impact on the income of the government! However, this would realistically never happen, people need their vehicles, the government recognise this and know they can always get away with "that little bit more".
As the economy tightens even more it will only get more expensive. To some people it won't matter where as to others its already proving a struggle to keep driving.

Agreed.I find it astonishing that the man on the street is unable to comprehend the extent of taxation on a litre of fuel and that the "oil company" makes a small margin. These men on the street are also totally unable to appreciate the extraordinary processes and logistical challenges that turn a barrel of foreign crude into fuel at the local petrol station.
I always smile when these emails do the rounds, every time the fuel prices go up!
There is nothing we can do about the government stacking tax on fuel. The companies named in the email supply fuel to the other garages/supermarkets anyway so it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference.
People just have to adjust to it. Change to a more economical car, change the way we drive or just emmigrate! The latter is becoming more and more attractive at the minute!

I remember seeing this almost word for word as a Facebook group about 2 years ago.
Worked really well, clearly.
Since 2/3 of the price of fuel is tax, a 10% reduction in the cost of fuel would only reduce the end price by 3%. And you can save 3% on your fuel costs by checking your tyre pressures, still having the liberty of filling up where you want.

I can't afford to put petrol in my smart car. Are you suggesting I sell it and go on the dole for the benefit of your argument?Hereward said:

The man on the street is stupid. That's why he's on the street.
