They were retro-convetred series production cars? Does this mean that they have series production VINs or were the re-numbered?

The Porsche 928S4 had the gearbox of a standard W124 Merc.
Piffle! The 928 doesnt have a conventional longitudinally mounted gearbox, it has a transaxle.
it's true though, the box itself is a mercedes 722, used in mercs all through the 70s

the gearbox itself is sort of in front of the transaxle/differential bit

The gear set, shafts, selectors etc?

The early 944 automatic used a three speed automatic slush box transaxle out of an AUDI 200.

Not any Japanese car... My 97 Primera had indicators on the left, same as my mates 04 Civic and every Japanese car I've been in and driven.
On the left on the Subaru Outback too

That's not made in the UK

I cant remember who makes them Borg-Warner or Getrag or similar. All 944s used an AUDI derived transaxle - the case still had a bellhousing on it, even though the clutch is at the other end of the torque tube.

The Toyota MR2 Mk 1 used the electic window mechanism from the Fiat X1/9.
X/19's also shared its bonnet release levers. With the Lamborghini Countach.

which Audi had a transaxle? I know the original 924 sgtarted off as a VW project before Porsche took over 100%, but I thought it was all Porsche (apart from the auto box)... I need to look at my books

The old BMW mini used the Chrysler Neon engine, and the new BMW mini uses the same engine as found in Peugeot/Citroen cars. or so I was told.
And the ford Duratec 2.5/3.0 as found in the ford Cougar/Mondeo is Half an Aston Martin engine, or the Aston Martin engine is two ford engines welded together lol.

If you need to look in a book Will, then you need more time on the cars.

AUDI 100-derived angine (with steel crank and a very different head and CIS Jetronic), VW K70 front brakes, VW Super Beetle front struts, VW Golf suspension arms, VW Beetle derived rear torsion beam, trailing arms, dampers and brakes and AUDI-derived transaxle. The only proper piece of Porsche engineering in the driveline was the torque tube. Im aware of the snailshell, but the vast majority of 924s built have an AUDI transaxle.

Well.
Just read all 40 odd pages biggrin
How sad!

Could be bullst

I think it was the MG Meastro/Metro? was recalled as the painted wheel rims offered no grip for the tyre.
When braking hard the wheel would stop, the tyre (and the car!) would carry on!
I know this did happen but can't remember which car.

Hmm, I heard this was a problem with the earliest 1.9 205Gtis, Only I heard the front alloys could possibly spin while the tyres stood still, such was the powah!! smile

Oh and the rear window of an Allegro would pop out if jacked up in the wrong place (apparently).

The Rootes Avenger was so structurally flawed that you couldnt fit an (remember these?) after-market sunroof - they couldnt cope with the lost rigidity!

Anyhow, to put this to bed before everyone else falls asleep and we start quoting chassis numbers at each other, I look it up and I was talking nonsense:

924: Has a 4 speed Audi 088 transmission, built by VW at Kassel, using special gear ratios.
Auto gearbox is a standard VW/Audi type 087 unit, with specific ratios again.
From June 77 a Porsche/Getrag 016 5 speed was offered (with a dog-leg 1st) was an option.
But in 1980 they used an Audi 5 speed, type 016.8 or 016.9

924S and 944: An Audi unit, either 016J or 016K depending on market. The auto was a 3 speed 087M unit.
968: auto: a new Getrag/audi developed 4 speed auto, derived from the ZF 4HP 18FL unit

More of a continuation from the 928S4 using a Mercedes gearbox post. Chat isnt precluded, although it could be more interesting...
