890,000 MX-5 owners have been PHers too. Somebody should have told Mazda that before they'd finished that signwriting.

Imagine how many they could sell if the little buggers actually, eventually wore out.

Yes, they are famously reliable, which is a fantastic thing for a sports car!

It's testament to the quality of the MX-5 that it has reached such high production numbers. However, I do think they hit the nail on the head with the second version, and it stands out to me as being marginally better than the Mk1. For me, the Mk3 is a little too far from the car's roots with it's slightly lardy weight, bigger engine and big fat tyres.

Having test driven a few in the last week I can confirm that they're great.

Unfortunately, I can also confirm that no matter how much I try to convince myself, I do not fit! weeping

Drove a mk1 when I was, ahem, 16. Only went up and down a high street but still puts a smile on my face even now when I think of it....

erm, the 1-millionth Corvette rolled off the Bowling Green assembly line on July 2, 1992. Since then I think they've made about 20,000 Corvettes year. They're probably on about 1.3 million now

Why aren't Guinness acknowledging this fact? Do they think the Corvette isn't a two seat sports car? Or do they think it has changed more between incarnations so doesn't count, where as the MX-5 looks the same apart from getting fatter?

Perhaps they're defining '2 seat sports car' as 2 seat roadster?

rofl MX5 ........ Well all I can say is you must have bought a Wrong'un ......honest angel
Having had mine back after an altercation with a curb she was tail happy, used to shimmy and shake all over the road and was generally nasty to drive. Took her for a full geometry check and hey presto she is back to being fantastic fun to punt around.

The moral of the story is make sure the car is properly set up before you make up your mind smile

Indeed. Very little actual size difference in reality. A cm or two.

Oh, and the dreaded Clarkson who rates cars 1 to 5 stars each week in the S Times rated the MX-5 at 14 stars when the Mk3 came out! Should we pardon him?

One hand in their pocket?

Incidentally, although the Mk3 is definitely largely than the Mk1/2, it's only a tiny bit heavier. And given that I'm a little bit lardy I can forgive it that.

+1 a typical ' I have never driven one , i'll just say what some other people say'.......... Drive one and then delete that comment chap.

There are always some ignorant idiots. So, what?

...this is presumably because at least half of all PHers drive one...

I think this is more like it. I own two of these among others (one of the very early pop-up lights and the latest) and both are so much fun.

Fun to cost probably the best ratio of all, if I am really honest.

And I am neither of these suggested above from Mr. Ignorant himself.

ahh i love the mx5 and will have one if i can get insured classicly (21 soon but not yet licenced not sure if exerience or age is key with classic) if the lexus LS400 plan falls through, the only thing that bothers me is like today we overtook one and it was driven an overweight, elderly 'ale drinker' who looked like hed be just as happy in an MGBGT or such, im not sure how to describe this kind of man or woman other than 'likely to have an interest in canal boats and/or birdwatching/trainspotting, and this image puts me off a bit tbh, but the appeal of £180 insurance and rwd open top fun is more then enough compensation
