Where's that clip of some supercars going fairly slowly around a bend and the suddenly an MX-5 driven by a madman hurtling past in a death-defying drift?

I'd willingly let Mr Harris have a go in mine and still attempt to tell me with a straight face that it's woolly and unresponsive.

Respected journalist; formerly of Autocar magazine, and now with Evo. Quite a quick driver too. Look up his test of the Lambo Gallardo Superleggera, R8, GT3 and others on mountain roads - awesome! smile

Because it wobbles like a jelly in an earthquake?

One supercar being driven sedately and one sideways MX5 wobbling all over the place doesn't necessarily mean that a Mazda is better than a GT40.

Chris Harris is right. Fun, cheap original MX5 was a million times better than the 60s British sports cars that it was an imitation of. But that's it.

Didn't the mk3 have 4 cup holders FFS?

How dare Mazda create a sports car that can be owned or run by anyone! they ought to be prohibitively expensive and terminally unreliable! wink
It is curious how TVR are out of business, Noble are regularly almost out of business, Lotus are regularly almost out of business yet customers will form orderly queues to buy MX-5, Z4 etc. It seems there's a large slug of people who say they want a "proper sports car" but won't go out and buy one!

My own approach is simple. If a car doesn't work reliably, or at least predictably, then it's not something I want to own.

The MX5 is better car to own than a GT40...

- parts are cheaper
- tyres are cheaper
- more accessible performance
- unlimited headroom
- more economical
- cheaper insurance
- cheaper servicing
- okay the GT40 is faster but after all it's only a Ford.. he he

Didn't that supercharged version get a very favourable review in the latest EVO issue?

Man in different opinion shocker.

The Mk3 MX5 is a bit over rated, but so is Harris. Yes he can drive a bit, but some of his articles would make Troy Queef cringe.

Make that two, I agreed with him. MX5 is so overrated.

It does seem like one of the most overrated cars on forums with people sometimes posting glowing reviews/pictures of them and the next minute they have one up for sale. Theres so many of them it's become a kind of self-perpetuating circle of ownership where no one says a bad word so they can be sold on. Am I to die if so mx5, I make purchase.

I wouldn't go as far as Harris and say MX5's are pants, but I do think they are pretty widely over-rated. I had one and thought it was good fun but a bit boring and slow.

Looking at readers rides though it is clear they can be vastly improved upon with minor fettling which then turns them into decent track machines. Sadly the one I had was standard, I suspect a track-modified example would be much more fun.

hehe

I haven't driven many MX5s however did test drive the more recent 2.0 one and just felt a bit too slow for the chassis or however you want to put it. The turbo ones kicking around sound like a great idea though!

When the alternative was a rusty or unreliable MGB or Elan then it was a winner.
Nowadays i would rather have anything else RWD from a BMW 318 to an S2000.

Me too.

The MX5 in Mk1 & 2 guise was underpowered and underwhelming.

Although that rehashed Mk1 with a BBR turbo and modern electronics for £7.5k looks like an intriguing proposition.

My wife had a Mk 1 years ago and on some rare occasions if I had been good I was allowed near it.

It was not fast, but it was fun, and the gearchange was snickerty-snick crisp.
