What is going on with new car lead times?! My lease car goes back in June, I want to opt out of the ocmpany car scheme this time so i've been looking around. I've decided I want a Skoda Superb, today I've been quoted 6 months for a new one, if I'm lucky! How on earth can it take 6 months to build a mid range mid power diesel?

I'm looking at having to hire a car for at least 2 months if I stick with skoda and I assume the times on VW's are of similar lenght as they share most bits?!

How many people are willing to wait 6 months for a car? I thought I was leaving loads of time but aparantly not!

I'd expect it be something to do with the uncertainty of the economy at the moment, and manufacturers trying to make their production schedules as streamlined as possible, batch producing models with similar specs.

This is the reason why my Dad hasnlt bought a new car yet. It's the same with all the manufacturers he has spoken to.

Could be lots of reasons. As stated above there is a lot of uncertainty with the manufacturers at the moment, but also with the entire supply chain.

I work for a small automotive parts manufacturer, we lost 2/3rds of workforce two years ago (200 people). There is much hesitancy about recruiting direct employees or engineering staff due to the uncertainty. Hence our otif and lead-time are effected. I imagine this is the same throughout the supply chain, giving a total six month lead-time.

Some of our customers are having suppliers going bust which also causes chaos to the supply chain.

Anything VW Group is taking a ridiculously long time, and this seems to be keeping nearly-new prices artificially high.

I recall one of the members on here - Balmoral Green - waited at least 4 months I think for his Fabia VRs. I think some BMW models are similar lead times to VAG stuff.

Ordered a stbox Golf GT back in September through work, granted I ticked lots of options so tbey might not have one sat in a field somewhere but delivery date was reconfirmed as end March 2011.

On the plus side, I've had six months of dicking about in sheds doing a spot of bangernomics...great fun as long as you know how to hold a spanner. smile

I picked up my Superb yesterday. Couldn't be bothered to wait 6 months but the dealership managed to find one in their system which matched out choice almost exactly: 170 bhp, TDi,4x4 Elegance spec estate.
It's taken less than two weeks since we first visited their show room.

Its the 140bhp diesel version, I do loads of miles with work so a diesel makes sense and does less damage to my company car tax but its no substitute for blatting around in an old V8 or something, got the golf instead of an audi or bmw so I can put the money into a weekend toy... biggrin

Which dealer was that Mike? I'd be keen to find a dealer willing to do some work to secure a sale, rarther than just sitting there not offering a discount and not willing to help!

Thanks

Had some dealings with Simpsons last year, didn't buy from them but seemed a good dealer very easy to communicate with and competitive pricing.

Ordered a 3 series at beginning of November with a quoted delivery date end Jan or beginning feb. Now revised to May! Colleague ordered an A3 black edition in June. It's still not here!

at least with that sort of time span you can be fairly sure the vehicle is being built 'for you' rather than shipped from some outdoor 'stack em' compound...on the rare occasions I have purchased a new vehicle I made the spec slightly unusual and chose an Individual colour to get a freshly built to order car..nothing too outlandish and it could arguably limit your resale market but I love having an unusual/rare car..ie not silver/black standard spec..though Im slightly surprised you have to wait so long if you are not going for special model or spec!!..

wish I could get a new car now...M3 Convertible Individual please
