RE: SOTW: Ford Mondeo ST24
Discussion
Good car!
I like the saloons of this era. For some reason on here there seems to be a consensus that any performance saloon must have RWD, but I think there's virtue to be had in a car that is in effect a giant, respectable-looking hot hatch.
It was the key to the appeal of the supertouring-era BTCC, and it's a shame so few manufacturers go for similar designs nowadays.

Eleven years ago, the Mondeo ST24's 2.5-litre V6 and consequent ability to sprint to 60mph in 8.0secs on the way to a 139mph top speed was more than enough for the outlandish bodykit
Yet the SOTW example doesn't even have the RSAP kit!!ST200 is the better car, but try finding a straight one.

well i never... had no idea you get an ST24 estate!!!
having driven an ST24 and an ST200 i can reccomend these babies as family sized fast and fun cars.. although my experience is driven in anger you will get about 15-18 mpg... cheap fun
They did ST200 estates too.having driven an ST24 and an ST200 i can reccomend these babies as family sized fast and fun cars.. although my experience is driven in anger you will get about 15-18 mpg... cheap fun
I do miss the rawness of the ST200 on occasion - surprisingly good B-road hoofer.
Geek alert - RSAP was standard on 5 door, optional on 4 door and estate.
Without RSAP that grille is correct, can't recall if the non-RSAP estate came with 12 spokes or the 4 spoke turbines.
Interior is correct for the year, I think only ST200 had full leather and even with those the first cars only had half. Full leather could have been an option on later ST24's, but I really don't think so.
With these, and indeed any 2.5 Mk1 / Mk2 Mondeo the beauty wasn't the power, but the way you could use so much of the cars ability so easily. Only real disappointment was the brakes, which weren't especially great, more of an issue on the ST200, that and the fact that the 5th gear acceleration on the motorway was easily eclipsed by most TD repmobiles.

On the ST200 I binned them, and fitted Mk3 calipers - made a big difference.Dave_ST220 said:
I prefer the brakes on my old Mk1 V6 over the ST220's!

Decent shed. I've always like estates with more go than standard. I had a V6 Rover 75 Estate that was huge fun at surprising BMWs in a straight line. Does the Mondeo Estate handle as well as the saloon? I cannot recall ever driving an Estate Mondeo.
yes, I had a 2.0 Ghia, which put out nearly 140bhp, so I'm surprise the V6 offered so little on top! It was a truly great car and when the new (well, not current but one before) one came out I knew that is what I would have one day.The rear bumpers exploding at over 100mph is crazy though, I had often wondered why you saw so many taped up ones, then I saw one go past on the motorway at crazy speed and its bumper was flexing all over the place and I thought - ahh, so that's what happens!
I sold mine as it was getting a bit long in the tooth and things like elec windows, power steering and sunroof were packing up (air con had failed too). Ran a 306 estate which was a step backwards in every respect, then got a 2.0 titanium mondeo estate, which is a superb car. Could do with a little more grunt though, maybe I should have got the ST220 after all.
