Simple, Cost
Body has already been crash tested
Engines are fully tested, i.e. emissions crap and type approval.
Changing a few panels and the interior, in the relative scheme of things is peanuts.
Thing is AM don't want to make these types of cars. Unfortunately Eurocrats see different and so to keep selling their desired car types they have to make something along the lines of this.
Look at it this way,
1. You want to build your next generation GT car and have 300m to invest.
2. Eurocrats say you have to lower your average emissions.
3. So either, spend your 300m on developing a small car with low emissions that detracts from the brand and have no new GT car, or Spend a couple of mil doing this to shut the eurocrats up and the rest on your new GT car.
That's a fair point but I can imagine they'd recoup more cost if they actually produced something people wanted to buy.Body has already been crash tested

I can imagine the kind of consumer research they did before going down this route.
1. Affordable AM: tick
2. Economical, small engined: tick
3. 2 seater: tick
4: Low emissions: tick
Directors: "ok let's tart up a Toyota IQ, this is exactly what our customers want"

In fairness, if I was a city based big flyer who spends £30k on a wristwatch and £10 on Lunch and wanted a car, one of these little snot-boxes would be ideal and save the eco-charge in london, and which little city car would I pick? The way over-popular Smart? the cheap and cheerful C1/107, a Ford KA, a Dawoo?
No, I'd pick an aston, because although it is a snot box, it's as well build as my £500K Marble Bathroom.
Still a bloody snot box though, I'll have a DB9 please!
I would say you buy the Smart actually. At least that was designed from the ground up to be what it is not some Toyota with badges on.No, I'd pick an aston, because although it is a snot box, it's as well build as my £500K Marble Bathroom.

That's like your £30k watch that says Rolex, but it's actually based on a Timex.
Cut & paste this link.

That would detract from the brand, AM don't want to be high volume it detracts from the exclusivity.I can imagine the kind of consumer research they did before going down this route.

I'm not saying this thing doesn't either, but that's probably why they are charging north of £30k for it.

I agree with what you're saying. I was just messing about.I'm not saying this thing doesn't either, but that's probably why they are charging north of £30k for it.
Such a shame though that this kind of car needs to exist in their product range but if it serves it's purpose then job done.
What a complete and utter fking abomination! the stupid fking bunch of s that dreamed up this total waste of crap need taking outside and being stabbed (shooting them would be too kind / quick). Aston stop talking complete and utter fking bks about EU regulations. How many of these wk stains on the reputation of the Aston marque do you have to fking sell then? If it average emissions across the range you've got to sell many more of these dog turds rolled in glitter vs the the V8's and V12's. Or are we going to revert back to the Dr Bez bks about they are the dinghy to the DBS / One-77 superyacht and they are only going to be available to existing Aston owners? When existing owners let it be known what an unloved abortion it was you changed tack and started spouting the EU bks.
So come on Dr Bez tell us the truth - how many of them do you need to build to meet EU regulations - you know the EU regulations that aren't implemented yet and have an exclusion for small manufacturers?
Bunch of fking cretinous s, you've successfully just killed off the UK number 1 brand.

Are you angry because the car is a 'bad' car or because you feel it's dented the abstract concept of image from what is an aspirational brand? So come on Dr Bez tell us the truth - how many of them do you need to build to meet EU regulations - you know the EU regulations that aren't implemented yet and have an exclusion for small manufacturers?

I think that's what he said if you see past the censorship.I was in Gaydon too this week and was amused to see the IQ's all lined up, still badged Toyota waiting for transformation. I guess I had expected more, but why would they waste the cash on developing something more than the mimimum?
They have recently been taken over, just before the industry crashed on its arse. Car sales are still down and everyone is cautious about lending or investing, suppliers are being given silly payment terms, its not an especially bouyant time to be investing in a towncar to get past some regs. I'd hazard a guess that its a cheaper exercise than investing in hybrid technology.
I think it's a great concept - comfort and style in a London-friendly package. My first car was a Messerschmitt 3 wheeler in 1970 and all I wanted to do was make it comfortable - and up the performance of course. Here we are 40 years later and Aston have stolen my idea! Why shouldn't Aston do what the hell they like? The proof will be in the sales and profit. Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but that should stop short of second-guessing Aston's business plan.
Can't resist adding that this isn't a baby Aston, more a foetus - but I suppose that will provoke a torrent of 'should have been stillborn' remarks....

I thought this was forced upon Aston (among many) by the EU, not by choice or part of a business plan. Can't resist adding that this isn't a baby Aston, more a foetus - but I suppose that will provoke a torrent of 'should have been stillborn' remarks....
Not so much still born, but should never have been conceived in the first place.
This is what happens when car companies have a drunken one night stand.

Please can we have a referendum on our membership of the EU?
But if we left the EU then my kids could get a place in the local school which is currently full of Polish kids, who's parents live in houses given to them by my local council, who by the way have just re fitted all of their kitchens, bathrooms and re tiled all of the rooves, who turn up to school in un taxed cars still with Polish plates, while I pay through the nose. No, No, I much prefer it the way it is....

The style and finish of the cabin is beguiling, truth be told, and certainly does the 'handcrafted in England' sill plate justice.
Trying too hard. That is not cool. Does the engine and rest of the mechanical bits state: 'machine crafted in Japan'?
I wonder if on turning the key the 'power, beauty, soul' (or whatever bks comes up on other models) is retained.
This is the third press release/launch/invite that is basically saying 'This tarted-up, overpriced Toyota IQ is a real, genuine, thoroughbred Aston Martin and anyone who says so is wrong, so there'.
That alone smacks of Aston realising what an enormous mistake they've made.
They could have got a small sports car with similar low emissions, badged it with any number of the names in Aston's portfolio, and retained their credibility for the same cost as this wretched mess.
