You are somewhat reticent about revealing what you drive, is this because you don't want to be labelled a tt just like you label other car owners of a particular marque?

Exactly - its becoming a real cliche and I think BM's marketing department are a bit out of touch if they think putting an "i" infront of a product name makes it sound futuristic/edgy/ecologically friendly.

It a way to signify petrol.
Thats whats its become today but in 70s and 80s it meant fuel injection. Lesser models were just a number eg 316. Although I dont know what the e in 525e meant.
I think it was 'economy' as IIRC they had lean-burn cylinderheads and taller gearing, although in Germany 'E' is sometimes used to signify injection as it's 'einspritzung' in German, hence Opel Manta/Monza/Kadett GTE.
Good fact about GTE!

Yes the Beemer "E" cars were lower revving lazier engines for increased efficiency. I think it stood for the Greek "Eta" or something but dont quote me on that

What BMW's announcement makes no mention of are the whispers suggesting that an 'M' version of the i8 could also be on the cards
So would that be the iM8? The ultimate penile extension. silly

lol I have a BMW.

But anyone who is so unimaginative and has to use a lowercase 'i' again doesn't deserve success.
