I would like to say that possibly I am unusual in that am addicted to manual gearboxes and I have in the last 30 years had Marcos, MG's, Lotus,TWO XJ6 cars (with manual gearboxes). YES TWO Manual XJ6's, a 1990 and a 1996 XJ40 and XJ300. These cars are magnificent and totally different to the normal XJ6 with auto box.
I concur with Jeremy Clarkson's sentiments that 'If he were the chairman of Jaguar he would not let anything other than manual gearboxes out of the gates.'
After 20 years of driving manual gearbox Jags I have to agree. They are sublime.
But now I have a problem. You see most of the people on this forum are speculating. They never really experienced what they are talking about. They suffer from foot in mouth disease. Sit in an armchair and spout statistics.
I now own a 2006 Jaguar XKR-S. Yes I own a V8 4.2 Supercharged Jaguar and if you have not owned one. Then sit back and watch match of the day and shut up. Because you don't have a clue. The supercharger will make you incontinent.
These cars are Aston Martin DB7 with a Cohiba thrown in.
AND if you don't understand that last sentence then you should not be putting forward a comment.
This car is a dream that I live. And I have a few other cars too. Every day I walk from my place to this car and well, I live the XKR-S.
I have (still) MG, Lotus and have had Jaguar XJ6. This XKR-S car is a dream. Don't even talk to me about Aston Martin, Porche, Audi or even Ferrari. This car is the one.
When the scales are balance, say what you like. Put your backside in the Recaros and I tell you. This is it.
I entirely agree with your sentiments regarding the manual XJ40 & X300.
However, I think you'll find we are in a tiny minority with our preference
over the an auto versions. I've lost count the amount of times mention has been made in car mags and on forums that 'these Jaguars are luxury saloons so should all be automatic and that the manual gearbox doesn't suit them', or 'the manual gearboxes are notchy and the clutch pedal heavy' or 'they were never popular in the showrooms and they couldn't be shifted' and so on.
The thing is, in the near future when these cars attain proper "classic status", it will be the manual versions that will be the more sought after,
just like all the saloons from the past.
