A mate just sent me a pic of the air filter he removed after getting his brother in law to look over his recently bought X5. It's got FBMWSH and was last stamped around 4k miles ago. The filter change was meant to be part of this service.

Looks to me like its never been changed. Think you get a good service just because it's a main dealer? I certainly don't.

Jeez, is it meant to be white? Definitely older than 4000 miles I reckon if it's picked up that amount of particulates/gunk.

I had the same on my X5
censored - never even checked it and only found out when I serviced it myself instead as their charges for labour far outweight what I pay a MAN heavy truck main dealer to service 32 tonner.

It looked like it was ready to collapsed and get sucked into the turbo.

What a PITA to change however.

I had similar with a certain large car dealer in Scotland, with initials like a type of electrical current.

I had a Renault Scenic from new, always serviced by said dealer, and was charged for changing the pollen filter.

When it was out of warranty, and I was doing my own servicing, it was due another filter, I opened up the housing to find - nothing.....

bds! Especially as my son is prone to bad hay fever.

Can an airfilter this blocked/dirty lead to engine damage or will it just reduce power?

I had a similar thing with my Clio. FSH and receipts to prove Spark Plugs had been done.

Had a misfire which was due to a faulty injector just before christmas but in the process of checking everything we removed the plugs to see that they were shagged! I thought the car was feeling a bit sluggish... new plugs and the difference was immense! Felt like I had put a wild cam in the car!

This is the reason I get people I know to service my car... I'm lucky that my brother is a mechanic and he has a lot of friends int he Industry plus a mate used to work for Audi when I had my Audi so I knew it was getting a proper job!

I can only echo the sentiments in this thread. A relative had a Suzuki serviced recently. Supposed to be an oil and filter change. I had a look after the 'service' and the oil and the filter hadnt been touched.

Why pay all that money for a main dealer service then? Its disgusting.
The car was on 6000 miles so an oil change was definitely needed to get rid of the remnants in the oil due to initial wear and tear.

Its just testament to the British work ethic. I don't like making sweeping statements, but the work mentality in this country is shocking. Perhaps its a 'human' thing though, and not solely British?

What did the garage say after you brought it up with them?

I doubt anyone thinks that.

With cars like BMW & Mercedes you really have to press the service advisors for what work they're going to do, and then, afterwards, what's actually been done. Mercedes uses an Electronic Service Sheet which you can access online, but it takes some knowledge of the car to figure out what needs doing. The dealer staff are universally clueless.

The other thing to watch is a change in the service sheet - a lot of manaufacturers who are doing free or cut-price servicing packages on new cars have really cut down the work required. Most cars now have nothing more than oil & filter changes for 3yrs, then at 4years (when the package ends) everything needs changing.

Thread book marked for the next time someone sayes they wouldn't buy a car without a full main dealer service history.

The other halfs old car had a full main dealer service history.

The fuel filter rusted through and dumped fuel all over the drive

Where as my air filter hasn't been changed (I check it every time I check the oil) in about 15,000 miles and its still as clean as when it came out of the box.

Would there be benefit in asking for the old parts to be returned to the owner when the car is collected?

You can do, no problem.. Just ask for them and you'll get them back.

Are you certain the airfilter was to be replaced?

They have quite a long interval, and are increasingly harder to get to these days.

Moral of the story (thread?) man-up, buy a socket set and do your own servicing. (then realise you haven't got any stamps in your service book when you come to sell it - bugger. I haven't thought this through have I....?)

Some garages have a bin of old parts specifically to give to people that ask, whether the work has been done or not. Just in case.

Doesn't set a great tone for the whole episode, though:

"Can I have the old bits back, because I don't trust that you'll do the job properly"
