Well, however we drive our 1996 328i Coupé, we do 100km with less than 8 litres.
A gallon is 4,5 litres, so... it makes approx 56 miles to the gallon.
Never had such a fantastic car!
Fast, nervous, economical, fairly practical, solid on the whole, and still not old-fashioned looking.
As my 33 year-old son repeats and repeats, there is only the M3 that's better!
I had a 328i coupe, it was an ex-demo with genuine Alpina alloys, Schnitzer(sp?) mirrors and full leather interior. High milage, 135k iirc but loads of history and all with the same garage.
On a steady motorway run 35mpg was easily achievable even with the auto box, I was planning on keeping it for quite a few years until a stupid bint drove an astra into the back of it outside the County Police HQ

8 litres per 100km is more like 34 mpg!
Heavens! Yes, I should have noticed that 56 miles (something like 90km if I'm not wrong again!) is impossible. Well perhaps with a basic Suzuki or something light like that...A gallon is 4,5 litres, so... it makes approx 56 miles to the gallon.

Werlll... I did everything you pretty much shouldn't with it when I bought it. It wasn't quite as straight-panelled as the ad suggested, and the mileage didn't quite tally up with the previous MOT.Just to get an idea on background. But it drove well, it feels as if it's done something similar to the 150k-or-so on the clock, and it's had the nikasil liner sorted. So I bought it.

It's far from perfect and it's had five owners, but it drives absolutely fine and, like I say - touch wood - It has given me trouble-free motoring for three-quarters of a year so far.
As it cost a total of £870 quid, I reckon that's not bad going, and it doesn't feel like wasted money. You're right, though, it is a bit of a gamble...

Either remove it or mask it off with newspaper, rub it down with some wet and dry after removing any flakey bits. Wipe it with meths/thinners to remove dust, then spray it with the rattle can.
