WHAT ?

My Dad has had a few, more like 7 mpg and 12 on a run.
Sounds about right for a pre-HE model or an enthusiastic run in an HE.

Every 5.3HE we've had has been pretty good on fuel, relatively speaking - but Im not going to preach about it - make your own minds up!

To justify, the current one is better on fuel than my 911, far better than my X300 XJ6 3.2 Sport (18mpg at best), much, much better than my brief affair with a R129 Merc 300SL and on a run would also better the consumption of my Ovlov 850R.

One was definitely an HE as we joked about if this is what the HE does, WTF does the non HE do.

He ended up just using it to collect the papers, 1 mile there, 1 mile back - obviously cold.... 4mpg

When he worked that out cost wise, he soon sold it.

There can be few better ways to part with a grand than this.

Get one of your mates to drive in a cap whilst you sit in the back, pretending you're en route from Number 10 to Threadneedle Street preparing to squander the country's bullion reserves keeping sterling in the ERM. Priceless.

For everything else (oil wells worth of fuel, several multiples of the initial purchase price in annual repair costs and the obligatory camelskin) there's mastercard...

Now, that I would like to know more about.
My memory is hazy but I remember my mate telling me it was a one off on trial with South Yorkshire Police. The PC reckoned it was converted by Broadspeed who added twin turbos, tweaked suspension and brakes, 5 speed ZF box and a LSD. It was alleged to hit 60 in sub 6.0 seconds with a top speed of around 150 (not bad for 1982)- I bet that gave a few Porsche Turbo owners a surprise.

Given that they did not become common I suspect the trial wasn't a huge success.

Any ex-south yorks traffic police know any more?

That sounds more like the Chasseur tuning setup, rather than Broadspeed, but I could be completely wrong, someone more informed will probably be along shortly to correct me. AFAIK Paramount Performance now own what was Chasseur.

Fantastic cars. I've owned two and also two XJS's, for some reason I was always more impressed with the saloon. I loved them.

The engines are actually very reliable, it's usually the ancillaries that give problems.

The natural cruising gait for the V12 saloon seemed to be about 110 and they were deceptively fast as the refinement masked the performance.

I remember trading my nearly new granada ghia (3 litre) in against the Jag (actually Daimler double six) On the way home I knew I'd done the right thing.

I never had any serious problems with any of mine, nor with my V12 E-type but they were all in good condition and well serviced. A neglected one is definately something to avoid.

my shed cost £ 300

complicated

old jags are great value at the present........

with ebay etc its never been cheaper to maintain a jag

ps the car only overheats if the radiator is allowed to clog and the distributor
is prone to the advance and retard seizing - both zero cost maintainence for
reasonable mechanically minded piston heads...........

Absolutely gorgeous motor. thumbup

The old man had three XJS's, all stright sixes, though. One 3.6 of similar vintage to yours and two later 4.0's which were ex-factory cars.

I was about 25 when he had the last one and was amazed (him being pretty 'uptight' about his motors) when he agreed to let me borrow it to take my wife for a long weekend in Scotland. I will never forget hooning up through Kielder forest in it.

But we never had/tried a V12.... and this itch is still there. evil

Great car.

A Daimler Double Six or an XJR are on my 'convince the girlfriend it's not such a terrible idea' list.

You mean in the same way you can convince her that sleeping with her sister is not such a terrible idea? smile

Old series 3s have a "hard man" image over here also.

although I DO think the X300/X308 WILL follow in its footsteps, if not the smooth whimsical "Lexus like" modern range.
The X308 is used particularly well in 'Snatch' as the bad guys' transport.
