It has a twin exhaust... this is unusual for an RS Audi (of modern times). Normally the S cars have the twin (or quad), and the RS has the 2 larger oval pipes.

Loans, largely.
What would you rather buy. A brand new A3 with a wig? or a 2yr old pukka M3 with less than 10k miles (http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2360367.htm) - I know where my money would go.

Neither, because they'll both depreciate shockingly. However comparing new to used is daft, because no mainstream car looks objectively good value new.

I've always thought 5 cylinder engines box out of their league in the cylinder numbers game. Especially in turbocharged form I'd have one over 'most' v8's. I prefer the sound, the torque delivery, fuel consumption, rev band, its a really good natural ballance for an engine.

Plus I adored my original S3 for its comfort, speed and ability to blend into any crowd from not looking out of place in a row of supermarket diesels to sitting perfectly at home between caterhams and Lamborghinis at a Pistonheads meet. I liked so much the fact it was just another small hatchback, which when you looked closer had all different panels. Beefy, curvy, sexy shapes and under the bonnet it had a turbocharged engine putting out (with a few small tweaks)nearly 300hp.

I said (many times) that if they put a 5 cylinder turbo engine in the S3 I would make it the second car I've ever bought new.. but HOW HOW have they taken so many good ingredients and got it so wrong!!! It's a bloody bus!! A massive, heavy, ugly, detatched from the driving experience, people carrier! This is not an RS3 it's the size and weight the RS4 should be!

What an epic fail!!! Audi I'm horribly dissapointed in you. You took inspiration from a golf that has lost its way in the mk6 and took it further in the wrong direction!

Knowing how Audi like to charge for extras, over £500 for red paint for instance, I took a quick shufti at their configurator. I'd like to say I was surprised that it's possible to spend over £52,000 on an RS3, but bearing in mind how Audi spec up UK press cars(Autocars A8 diesel longtermer lists at £90k and I think the RS5 they tested was £72,000) it seems entirely reasonable.... if your'e a multi-millionaire needing a little shopping car for stuff that won't fit in the Veyron.

I like. Wouldn't have it as my main car, but a great little city runabout :-)

I wish I had that option here.

At the 35k price point, as an example, the newest M3 I could get would be about an 04/05

Nice enough looking but not that different from a normal A3 as far as I can see, although it looks like Audi have been rather taken with some of the design features from the Citroen DS3 design. Wheels are quite err… funky.

Please don’t believe everything Mr Clarkson says.
What does Jezza have to do with it?

Im afraid in the "Audi drivers are cocks" stakes, Jezza was rather late to the party and the accusations had been flying about them on ph for at least a yr before he stared saying anything.

The RS3 looks awesome, I agree about the wheels, but they are an option in black and red. As for the price tag, top end full spec'd up, 50k for a limited 1 of 500 coming to the UK, aint bad in my eyes.

As for the all Audi drivers are wkers (and befor you say Im NOT an Audi driver) it aint so, I see planty of Audi's on the roads and Id say 15% of them are wkers, planty more wkers in your BMW if you ask me. Ye Clarkson gets to say his opinion on tv for every one to hear, but he's one person, he aint right all the time.

The more popular a car gets, the more cocks you see driving them.

Therefore it stands to reason that the more you see on the road, the more cocks you will see driving them.

Or have people, as usual, had a logic bypass?

This pretty much sums up my opinion. I love the new engine - its powerful, torquey, characterful yet economical. I dont think its overpriced at all compared to the rest of the market and i dont think its too heavy, again when you compare it to other cars you can buy.

But why do they have to make it in 'bus' format only? Why do they have to make it so ugly? I basically want the current shape 3dr S3 exactly as it is now - but with the RS3 engine and drivetrain, that would be Audi perfection.

As its stands I would rather have the supercharged S4 or the V8 S5 for similar money.

I'd agree with that. And it's why I like understated quickish hatchbacks. Complete anonymity when you need it, fits in everywhere, but you can still have a bit of fun.

But the RS3 just doesn't do it for me. Which is a shame.

It does seem expensive, but has anyone configured a VW or Audi on their website recently?
Seems the norm now..Add a few options and the price gets silly.

This will probably some with most pricey options included such as Leather and Nav.
I ordered mine about a month ago and I was lucky to get a build slot, try now and it might be too late.

By the way, it's very well specified as standard, full nappa leather, sat nav, parking sensors, xenon headlights, bluetooth phone prep, heated seats, the 19" wheels. Most of which are extra on the TT-RS which is 7k more to start with.

Also the red trimmed wheels shown here aren't standard, the silver ones are which are nicer IMO.

I can't understand why everybody thinks this car is sooooo overpriced.

Its 40k, what else will get you to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds so quickly for less. Wasn't the Focus RS 500 over 35k. People, please don't start quoting used cars as comparison as its not like for like. The 1 series M is likely to be 40k+ as well, a cayman is 50K.
The base price is 40K but with options I expect it will be 45K-50K. There are quite a lot of very good new - or some brilliant nearly new - cars in that range so you would need to want an RS3 a lot to go for it. But I think that will likely apply to the 1 M too. Still, I like the look of the RS3 and if 4-wheel drive is important (not really so in the UK but much more useful here in Switzerland) then I'm sure it would be a good car to own - at least until you had to sell it and take the depreciation hit!
I know what Audi are normally like for options, but the RS3 seems different. It comes with heated nappa leather seats, xenons, 19" wheels, bluetooth & sat nav as standard. Apart from the optional bucket seats I cannot see any references to additional cost options.

they have only ever made two great cars in my opinion (RS4 and R8) and I prefer a bit of sporting excellence and breeding meself.
Of course, because the ur Quattro was a pile of st which only did the trivial things of putting a turbo and 4x4 together in a coupe which not only revolutionised the way we think about performance cars and how to apply power, but also gave way to one of the most pioneering rally cars ever which turned the sport on its head and gave us rallying as we know it today.

Then there was that bag of nails known as the Sport Quattro, a Group B homologation special which was one of a small group of cars which took rallying to the most extreme level ever seen.

Oh, and not forgetting the RS2, which put a 315bhp engine in a family estate car, out accelerated a McLaren F1 and started a whole genre of performance luggage carriers. That was a crock of st too.

Numpty.

yes I think Audi have just as much right as BMW to consider themselves to have "sporting heritage". Recently, I'm not particularly impressed with the "sporty" road car offerings from either company, but BMW are doing a damned slight better than Audi at it.
