RE: Driven: Audi RS3 Sportback

Indeed and I think that's the Audi's saving grace. I would never buy a 1M, because the body style makes no sense to me - not enough practicality to be a family car, yet too compromised by the need for rear seats to be the best drivers' car it could be. It just doesn't offer anything that I'd actually use over a Cayman, whereas I could see myself being interested in the Audi as a family car at some point in the future.
I suppose what I'd like to see someone produce, is a miniature (Focus sized) M3 touring.
I'm with you there, maybe somewhere between 1 series and a 3 series... a 230i lets say..I looked at the 130i and it's a great car but you might as well have a 2 seaterI suppose what I'd like to see someone produce, is a miniature (Focus sized) M3 touring.

I believe BMW have announced an estate version of the next 1-series, but unfortunately it's going to be FWD. http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/...
Interesting, it sounds like a great car. I agree with the point that some people want a decent car which doesn't put them 'on edge' all the time. Driving a car that does that day to day, i know how i sometimes long for something a bit more relaxed but with the power there if i need it.
As for the price, i wonder how much of an impact the devaluation of Sterling has had. A couple of years ago, we were at €1.40 to the £. Now we're at €1.10 at best.
At £40,000 and £1 : €1.10 this would suggest a 'european' price of €44,000
if the exchange rate were at £1 : €1.40, this would produce a 'UK' price of £31,240
That's quite a difference if my maths are right. (possibly not)

Sorry for having an opinion. I forgot they're not allowed.
"your opinion" or JC`s opinion?I drove into Glasgow the other day and an A4 S Line was so close to my bumper it was fking dangerous..
Oh, and my boss drives an Audi and he drives like a ck too...
I know every car company has it's dangerous drivers but i have never witnessed it as bad as Audi, it's not Jeremy Clarksons view, it's real life.
I would also like to point out though i do like Audis i have owned two, but you can't deny the modern day Audi driver is more than likely going to be agressive.

It will be interesting to see if any future RS's follow the way of the RS4 and R8 when this 'S line plus' position sells so well, enthusiasts are a minority of car buyers.
A great term, and very valid question!
Why waste millions developing bespoke "scalpels" for driving enthusiasts, when similar stats and sales can be acheived with a breathed on "hammer" garnished in RS logos and tinsel.
I suppose it depends on what floats your boat, but with petrol at crazy prices outright speed is becoming less important in my opinion. I'd rather have something involving and fun (DC2 Integra Type R, Clio 182 Trophy) rather than something that is just license riskingly rapid.
Good point about the sales figures though. Audi must sell bucketloads of RS and S line models on the strength of the brand. Amusing when most S line's have shockingly firm suspension. (I dread getting a lift from my collegues A4 S line.)
My 2p.

Lets just hope they follow Merc with the A-class and keep the proper cars RWD.

Thats a shame. Sounds like BMW are selling out. First they dropped the manual gearboxes in the M5, now they are getting rid of N/A //M engines. They make an X5 'M' but not a Z4 'M' and now they are switching to FWD. Ultimate driving machine my arse!
Lets just hope they follow Merc with the A-class and keep the proper cars RWD.
To be fair, it seems that the 1-series will be offered as RWD in some body styles. All seems very odd, really. Lets just hope they follow Merc with the A-class and keep the proper cars RWD.

they have only ever made two great cars in my opinion (RS4 and R8) and I prefer a bit of sporting excellence and breeding meself.
Of course, because the ur Quattro was a pile of st which only did the trivial things of putting a turbo and 4x4 together in a coupe which not only revolutionised the way we think about performance cars and how to apply power, but also gave way to one of the most pioneering rally cars ever which turned the sport on its head and gave us rallying as we know it today. Then there was that bag of nails known as the Sport Quattro, a Group B homologation special which was one of a small group of cars which took rallying to the most extreme level ever seen.
Oh, and not forgetting the RS2, which put a 315bhp engine in a family estate car, out accelerated a McLaren F1 and started a whole genre of performance luggage carriers. That was a crock of st too.
Numpty.

Put it this way, you can be damned sure it costs Audi alot less to make an A3 than it does BMW a 1er or Mercedes A Class. Tarting up a Golf and selling for premium prices has made Audi very profitable. I'm not saying that's right but at the end of a day it's all business...
Remeber, with a remap this engine will see 400 bhp and 400 lbs/ft, so instead of paying £1200 extra on the professional bluetooth brushed aluminium nappa dash inlay pack, save the cash for the remap.
In fact, do not look at the options list, just choose a colour, white should do it as it isnt an extra and just buy the car and forego the garnish, the car will still be driverable without all the crap they want you to ladle on, someone will still buy it secondhand, you dont need those seats that look like a giant leather nose, its all there to tempt your fragile ego and lust for shiny toys, even the most basic A3 you can buy will do the job with no options and really, it doesnt cost Audi that much more to make one of these compared to a 1.6 FSi so you are paying over the odds anyway so when you hit that options list its just pure profit and 99 percent of the time most of it makes no difference.
Anyway, they will then bring a lightweight version out at some point without all the crap on it and call it club sport, lightweight or RS3R and you will get all excited about how much lighter it is as it is shorn of unecessary stuff and how much more focused it is, create your own RS3R and avert your coverting eyes fromt he options list, buy it, remap it and have a 400 bhp 4wd car for 40 grand.
