Maserati is due to unveil the replacement for the ageing beauty that is the Quattroporte saloon
Ageing? They could keep producing current model for another 20 years and it would still be one of the sexiest designs. Everytime I see one it makes me cloud9
ain't that the truth.

utterly gorgeous

Quattroporte...Sexy??? Did you put them two words into the same sentence?
looking at your car history I think the whole concept of sexy has somewhat passed you by...

Quattroportini means four little doors
I suppose they could give it a rear hatch and call it the Quintoporte. I reckon they'll just end up calling it the Berlina - still sounds good in most languages and gives the mags the excuse to use the headline 'Ich Bin Ein Berlina' when they test it.

biggrin inside of the car is beautiful, but that front end i cannot forgive
Strangely it's the cabin that I reckon is the weak point. Oh well.. beauty, eye, beholder and all that... think we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one...

I'm guessing you're pointing towards the fact that they will never be driven off-road...if so you have a fair point, but also I would have thought a Maser SUV would have to be slighlty sporty to drive and can't imagine something based on a jeep would be as such...
It would be sporty if they based it on the SRT8 Grand Cherokee, which would allow high performance and zero off road capability. It's the only way they could make it work.

That SUV looks horrific. Perfect for footballers wives. Is the Jeep platform any good?
Surely it would need massive modification to make it suitable for being the underpinnings of a Maser?
confused
Does it matter if it's any good?

Porsche tarted up a Touareg can't see why fiat couldn't do the same.

Please don't do an SUV Maserati.
We all shouted that at Porsche too, and they didn't listen.
And still don't.

I don't really see Italy as a country that does SUVs. I suppose in some ways the Lamborghini LM002 was a pisstake in this respect, but other than that you'd have to back to the '50s and the Alfa Romeo 1900 Matta to find another. I've never got the whole 'SUV style' argument either. With the exception of Land-Rovers and Range-Rovers, which manage to get away with it thanks to their honest, slabby industrial simplicity of line, they all look lumpen, vulgar, over-detailed and bulky to me. Not in the least bit 'stylish'. Italian design houses, who've always specialised in the sleek and streamlined, are really going to struggle to maintain composure with an SUV.

I really love the Quattroporte I'm not entirely sure why I love it so much but if I had a toy tucked away in my garage and I wanted a luxury car to waft arround in, with the occasional blast through a few twisties it would be one of these without a shaddow of a doubt.
You can keep your Ferrari FF and your Panamera. I think the Quattroporte is much like a Range Rover (not the sport) its classless, original and a timeless piece of design that will age very well.
I just hope it can back it up with a fantastic driving experience like the last model and i hope they keep that incredible sounding naturally aspirated V8.

Does the original article not say upper end 5 series/E-Class rival?

it does, but based on other ideas they have its very possible they could launch a 3 series rival or even dish out fiat 500's with maserati badges.. how awful would that be?

I think if they were priced competitively there is no reason why it wouldnt rival a 3 Series (appart from people being idiots and refusing to try one)
I remember a test of the Quattroporte vs an E60 Alpina 5 Series and a few other rivals which despite the lack of ultimate power compared, it was a better drivers car and quicker arround a lap.
If you can scale the Quattroporte down and make a Maserati that handles better than the 3 Series, looks better (which isnt hard) is easy/unintimidating to drive and is a Maserati it can't fail.

Hm BMW or Maserati...... especially the 3 Series, there are lumps of rock with more character.

Fiat 500's with a Maserati badge would be truly awful though.

Hmm, think the Touarag was a much better base to start with IMHO. But time will tell, good luck to them, I won't be able to afford it anyway!
