Ha ha. So the old girl is famous. Although, the reg number had been photoshopped!!

I purchased this car off of Johnny back in October. I paid nowhere near the price quoted in the article though.

All running good a few new bits were needed. Exhaust, metal water pipes and various other pipes.

Other than that it still flies and has me grinning from ear to ear.

Isn't it riding a bit low at the back?
Yes it is. Had the rear beam looked at when I had new shocks fitted (another job that had to be done). They said the beam was fine it had just been lowered. I will get it back up one day!
Set of stock springs shouldn't be too hard to come by. If you check out the wheeler dealers episode of the 205 gti there's had the same problem if i remember correctly.
I thought they were torsion bar arse ends??

Never got a chance to own a GTI but I did have an '86 1.8 diesel back in '99. Not what you'd call the fastest car around but by the gods did it handle. Loved chucking it round corners knowing full well that it would hold (cracking car in the snow as well).
I've got one of them! It's awesome! OK, maybe that's over generous. But when I drove it home, I could definitely see why people rave about the GTis. "So they're like my car, but even betterer!"
Plus the fact that I'm yet to get below 55mpg (that's average, brim-to-brim) helps the pocket somewhat.

In fact, sod it: It's awesome!!!

So what points would someone look out for when trying to find a good example; one that could confidently be used as an only car to do around 10,000 miles a year - mostly cross country drives of around 120 miles and a little town work?

I'd say mileage is not really important on a 20+ year old car, really needs to be on condition, check for rust at the bottom of the door pillars, service history, play in the rear beam. front chassis leg damage, really just looking for accident damage as most have been put in hedges at some point.

If your looking to buy one and you have an iPhone. It is worth getting the 205 GTI buyers guide app. Good hints and tips to look out for along with videos.

If not you can buy the book. It's by Jon Blackburn £7.50 on eBay.

Buy a good one, replace all the hoses. I did 18k miles a year in mine, got bored of blowing hoses every few months. Samcos were the best upgrade I ever did.

[quote=whosgotazure111s]All brings back great memories.

'so bought myself a nearly new silver 1.6 GTi (E556 UGK) and then two nearly new 1.9 GTis - a white one (F632 BOJ) and then a red one (G283 OGW)'

Just found this website via search engine where we entered our old car reg. no. (F632 BOJ) and it linked us to your post. We owned BOJ until about 2002! Happy Memories!

I still own this car 2 and half years later.

We have had our ups and down. Head gasket failure, launching a 10mm socket through the gearbox casing at 60 mph (long story) and getting into the Detailing side of things.

Here are a few pictures.
