It doesn't matter how much we all pine, there'll never be an era like this again. Ballistic machines.

such as Lancia filling the roll cage of the S4 with nitrous oxide to feed an engine that was already turbocharged and supercharged
Gahhhhh! Why do these hackneyed old chestnuts keep appearing in Rallying threads? It wasn't true at the time and it sure ain't true now! Nitrous oxide just doesn't make sense in a rallying environment.
They used to mix toluene into the fuel and the fumes from that were pretty unpleasant for the drivers/co-drivers
Ah something I can agree with, yep Toluene is a very good octane booster but has/had nasty effects on humans, its not to be confused with Nitrous Oxide though. Anyway Jean Ragnotti (who was asked to look into the Toivonen/Cresto crash) suspected the deaths were a result of Henri passing out due to fumes from a fuel leak.

fairly certain that the roll cage rumour was something to do with the Le Mans Porsche 917's i think, and the fire extinguishers were changed at every service with the group A delta not the group b.

Aren't todays (or at least last year's) WRC cars quicker though ? I think it's still an awesome spectacle of skills and danger, but maybe I've lost my rose tinted glasses ?
Erm in a word, no.

Group. B cars were savagely powerful in comparison to today's efforts. The Delta s4 and quattro were around 2.4 secs to 60 and 2 - 2.5 times the power.
Erm yes! the tyres and the trick diff's were a large help to the torque slab that were the 2 litre turbo lump's party trick. It produced the same torque from 3000 to the rev limit

I don't think the WRC will ever get back to the 'Glory Days' because the media dont take much intrest anymore after Richard Burns died frown , and Colin McRae died frown. So you have to resort to Dave if you want to watch it.

Also there isn't enough competition nowaadays as its all Citroen and Ford. Even a couple of years back there were Scooby's , Evos , Skoda (with the Octavia), Citroen , Peugeot and Ford battling it out for the WRC crown. You also knew most the drivers... Petter Solberg , Colin McRae , Richard Burns , Seb Loeb + a truck load of Sweeds and Finns , wheras now the only ones i know are Chris Meeke , Ken Block , Seb Loeb.

The best rally car IMO was this:

Lancia Stratos biggrin

On another note , the best Motorsport years were:

BTCC - 90's
F1 - 90's/00's
Rally 90's

Group B was the pinnacle of rally, imo.
It won't get topped.

Petter Solberg drives for the privatly entered Citroen Xsara. doesn't he? There are a couple of drivers i still know but the WRC not being broadcast like it used to so i've lost intrest

Tis a nice picture of the Stratos though.

Ooh, love this! The Renault 5 Turbo II was pretty cool, too. Something about the idea of a mid engine hatch... Hatchbacks are practical machines. Put a stonking turbo engine in the back, however, and any pretense of practicality is lost. They're just mad, that's why I love 'em!

Saw one of these in the "online car dealership" in GT5, but it's nearly Cr.3,000,000, and I already committed to buying the Panoz Esperante GTLM. I think in GT4 it was like Cr.400,000. That's some inflation in GranTurismoland!

Could you also look at bringing it back to the UK and letting me have a sit in it? I've wanted one as long as I can remember, I've not even seen a road-going version in the flesh...

You're right about the 917s. That's a whole other story...

Group B Deltas had the special fire extinguishers too. An old colleague of mine, who definitely knew about such things on account of around 20 years of top line rally mechanic experience, told me many years ago.
