I think you have missed out the Defenders strongest point imo, which is its completely "classless" image. You can turn up anywhere in one and just fit in.
You've not seen my Defender!

The ergonomics are laughable. Handbrake by ankle. Gearlever somewhere near passenger. Window winder by other ankle. Surprisingly good fun to drive on country roads though like a vintage car. I borrowed one and had a bump in Hendon traffic (sorry Madam didn't see you down there my fault) and another time carried a massive 5 bar gate on the roof rack with barely any overhang. Disappointingly corrosion prone. The image is very strong but I suspect that a Land Cruiser is better all round. Like people say it will be a difficult act to follow.

I know, but I'm hardly on the cutting edge of technology - I only got an Xbox 18 months ago, an iPhone less than a year ago, and I still think tablets are something you swallow.... now where's my minidisc player gone? smile

I can't think of a single other car where you could meet the Queen in it at Buckingham Palace in the morning, then nip to Asda to get some Monster Munch for lunch, and finally end day parked outside you favourite pub or watering hole for a spot of light refreshment.
Along with the Spitfire, nothing sums up the "Best of British" quite as well as the Defender cool

(que the Elgar and drive off into the sunset........ ;-)
Rover P5, P5B, Coupe would do this - as would most British classics at the upper end of the market at the time (Jags, Bristols etc). Original Minis also. Not much in the way of off-road ability though!

Just waiting for delivery of a new 110 crewcab , plain blue paint, steel wheels, vinyl seats, rubber mats, perfect! (with the addition of air con and central locking). trading in our 17 year old 110 Hi-cap, which followed a 110 v8 truck. They take a bit of acclimatisation when you first drive one as the vague steering makes the inexperienced driver zig zag down the road like a yacht going head wind. Once you learn to go with the flow they are suprisingly nimble and COOOOL beasts

Let's not forget also that whilst the Defender is quite slow by modern standards so is the depreciation....

I have an 07 Defender and it's not dropping in value very quickly at all, and as for economy I'm getting 34mpg by my calcs

Mine too....I'm in the process of looking for one at the mo. I think it is probably the coolest vehicle available today!

Depreciation does not feature madly in these cars. My 1986 90 V8 County cost me £4K 10 years ago and I bet I could get close to that now as it has been looked after and has sub 70K miles on it. It may do 16 mpg , but I love driving it and it is the only car I have ever owned where when it is parked I come back to find a note under a windscreen wiper - "if you want to sell give me a call". Gorgeous motor. Tim

I often have this problem with my V8 series landy. Left it at the MOT centre 2 days this year, and 3 people had made offers for it! A little cheeky if you ask me...

On another note, I'm truly sad to see this icon go in 2013. I do hope it's not replaced by some confused crossover vehicle rolleyes

Down here in Oz the Cruiser is simply known as the Land Rover recovery vehicle. All was going well for L-R until Toyota decided to build the same thing only reliable.

Not cheap mind but with a 4.5L V8 turbo diesel (205bhp and 316lbft) it should do for about 20 years. They are a common site here in Queensland, see http://www.toyota.com.au/landcruiser-70-series/ran...

Please wash you mouth out with soap you rude boy! A Land Cruiser is plastic rubbish! A Defender is a proper off road vehicle that, it has been said before "is a turn up at any event vehicle", I for one will not part with my TD5. come the end of the Defender, there will be alot of people who will miss this vehivle! how many other vehicle owners wave at each other? Not many!! Keep your badge green and gold folks!!
