RE: SOTW: Jaguar XJR
Discussion
Sorry to be a bore but for shed money you're much better of just getting a plain 3.2 or 4.0 but then admittedly shed of the week wouldn't be so interesting. Wonder if anyone buying this would bother getting it a new passenger mirror. I think such scrapes add character (i have a similar attitude to bodywork as Nascar drivers!). Whilst some people groan everytime a Jag, Merc, BM or Alfa is up, they do capture the spirit of shed ownership perfectly...
A mate had one of these until quite recently. It was ridiculously fast, superlatively comfortable, handled surprisingly well, and emptied his wallet alarmingly frequently, and at the slightest opportunity. It also drank fuel at the rate you would expect given its performance. He absolutely adored it.
Not a car for OCD sufferers, unless you have a deep pocket. There will always be something that needs attention. The trick to running one seems to be to ignore / live with the niggles, and keep on top of the critical bits. The mechanicals on my mate's car were pretty reliable.

He's had it for 50k miles and never bothered to address this and other things?!
I guess it depends on how much money he has sunk into other, more expensive areas than chrome trim...Or he could just have a very loose definition of 'well looked after'

Well said! This is a £1000 car, and should be treated as such. Yeah, ok, it's also a Jaguar, but anyone who wants to own one as a future classic, should be looking at spending 4x this amount potentially, to find a mint example in the first place.I'd love to buy this, but as I do 20k a year, and already have a second car, I suspect the divorce would cost me as much as the potential running costs!
Would make a great Le Mans car though, and as previously mentioned, should be worth close to the asking price in spares! (Would the 'charger fit anything else?)

Hmm, maybe it's just me taking the SOTW too serious, but I'm uncomfortable with this one. I guess everybody agrees that this Jag will require some serious spending soon, if you want to renew the MOT. This would push it way beyong shed territory (especially if you factor in running costs).
No, I thought SOTW was about the overlooked stars in the ads that you actually could buy (and run) within the 1000 pounds bracket. A few of years ago (when I didn't know SOTW) I was actually looking for a car for about that price and ended up with a Nissan Primera. It worked fine for a couple of years and hence would have been a prime shed, if only it had been more fun to drive.
What do people think? What should the SOTW be, just for dreamers or also for serious bargainers?
or just a broad spectrum of cars.....prefer the dreamers myself No, I thought SOTW was about the overlooked stars in the ads that you actually could buy (and run) within the 1000 pounds bracket. "very well looked after car needs some tlc on rear arches an passenger wing mirror missing."
Somewhat a contradiction in terms, surely?
"...also chrome trim on back bumper is bent where someone before i had the car tried stealng it."
Oh well, I'm impressed the previous owner liked the car so much they wanted it back!

HAHA i read that in the same way too... unless the previous owner left something in the boot, ? could have been a drug dealers carSomewhat a contradiction in terms, surely?

Quick point from the grammar police: what's with the apostrophe in "Jaguar's", first paragraph? Journalism these days, I don't know.
The monkey that I normally employ to type up my pieces was more interested in typing out the script for Hamlet, for some reason.Joking aside, that paragraph started out reading some thing entirely different, where an apostrophe would have made sense. I then re-wrote it. But not properly. Fixed now
I still remember like it was yesterday clarkson testing one of these (the slightly later v8) against the e39 m5. Absolute bonkers dream machine that people would have been paying almost the asking price per month!
I bought one when they hit 20k about 12 years ago and ran it for a year....superb machine.
Hard to believe there now shed money.
