I love the XJR. Looks lovely, homely interior and the drive is excellent.
My XK has been excellent, other than usual servicing and the odd bit of work, the car has been 100% reliable, never failed to start, never let me down, starts on the button even after sitting around for 3-4 weeks in the extreme cold. Nothing has broke or fallen off in the interior or exterior, all the various electric toys work. The car has now done 96000miles, in the 50,000miles that i've had it i've hit the limiter more times than I can remember. It short it has done an excellent job. None of the above applies to my other car (daily hack). If it wasn't for baby No.2 on the way i'd be keeping the jag. Everyone in the house hold will be shedding a tear when the big cat goes to a new owner.

These are the biggest heap of fking st around, everyone who owns one think they are great, they are are just some old bds car with a poorly developed engine. For 1k it better have a full tank of petrol.
What a pratt.

You take good photos, but obviously know fk all about cars!

You may have spent some time next to some exotic metal, but doubt you have ever actually been in them, let alone drive them.

This SOTW is exactly what is says in the title - it's about SHEDS. And this one ticks all the right boxes.

"Poorly developed engine" - HAHAHAHAHA! I think if you speak to most Jag owners / enthusiasts on forums, etc, you will find out that the AJ6 / AJ16 are some of the best units ever developed.

Keep your head in your uni books, son - stay off PH if you're going to piss everyone off with silly and pointless comments.

You haven't done yourself many favours here, considering your trying to promote your photography skills! No one will be interested if you have blind opinions on cars, without actually experiencing them.

I personaly don't like these older Jags but in my opinion in the last 3 or 4 years with the likes of the XF and XKR etc I think they've started to make some fantastic cars. The old ones though?, I would rather spend more and get an M5 of the same vintage.
hmm, I found this:

but it's 4 times the price, you are a long way from shed territory at that price and I'm letting you have a fair bit of leeway on the age...hmm...

I agree.

Even a really bad example of an E34 M5 will set you back over £2.5k. And that will need a lot of fettling to get it running how it should.

E34 M5s never have been, and I doubt they ever will be, in SOTW territory.

It is interesting you say this. Jaguar's latest models are far more mainstream in look and feel than their older cars. Though I personally prefer the feel of the old school Jag, I do believe Jaguar needed to make the change since most buyers want their car to look and feel like it is German, rather than the traditional British approach.

You very, very nearly got me into some very serious trouble this SOTW!!!

I showed this to my other half, and rather than saying 'What a daft idea!!!', she said, 'ohh...that looks nice'.

Autotrader beckoned.

...and as luck would have it there was another one on there, £990. XJR6. About 2 miles from me.

The conversation went a bit like this:

Me: (Half jokingly) 'Look at this one, looks bit nicer that that one [points to SOTW] as well.'
Her: 'Why don't you go and have a look at it tomorrow while I'm at work?'
Me: 'I'm not sure thats a great idea...you do realise its a 4 litre superchard 6. It'll drink a bit...and it'll be a heap for that money...'
Her: 'Well you don't have to buy it, just go and have a look...'
Me: You know how that'll go don't you? Ohh...its a bit tatty, some funny rattles...oh...bloody hell its fast. I'll take it!!!'
Her: 'Can't hurt to have a look.'
Me: 'Ok, well i'll check how much it'll cost to insure first...' (By this point I'm actually quite serious about going to look at a sub-1k Jag XJR)
Me: (Confused finishes its agonisinly slow search) 'Hmm...£1800 a year...maybe not after all...'

I suspect I have just had a very close miss!!!

gamefreaks - check out classic insurance with Footman James or Peter Best - should be around £300ish. Cheaper if you are a member of a Jaguar club.

What's the catch? IF I did buy one, it would be my only car so would need cover for 9k miles pa and commuting.

I had one of these for a couple of years. They're brilliant when they're working well, but even the smallest mechanical fault detracts significantly from the entire driving experience and they're monstrously expensive to put right.

This particular car... perfect for dismantling as i imagine it would be worth more in parts. Or even better, as a demolition derby special!

Give them a call - try Footman James first. You can get unlimited mileage policies too.

You may need to have the use of another car as your main car, but worth giving them a shout.

Good luck! They are glorious cars, and now for the same price as the mobile phone option on my Sovereign.

I bought a 1993 L reg E34 M5 (3.8) with 170k on it for £2250 3 years ago. It had a big oil leak at the time hence it was cheap. A new sunp gasket and some new sump bolts and she was fine. Fast as hell and joyous to drive. After 3 months of smoking her round as my daily the clutch went so I sold her. For £2250. Wish I had kept it and spent some money on her.

I've grown up in a world of Jags as my dad has had nothing but for over 30yrs. Some of my earliest memories involve long journeys in a gold series II XJ12 with white shag pile carpet. Even though the old man has worked his way through a number of gearboxes in his years of Jag ownership he has never shifted loyalty to the brand.

For the past eight years he has been running a 2000 XJR V8, which if you dismiss the dated dashboard and interior, has been a fantastic car and never ceases to amuse me everytime I drive it. I have driven a number of track cars and highly tuned jap performance cars but the driving experience in the XJR is really something special and unique. The linear power delivery from the supercharger is spot on and the way the big cat holds the tarmac on twisty b-roads is beyond anything i would have expected from such a big beast.

Due to the current cost of fuel and the shear size of the latest generation XJ's the old mans most recent purchase has been a XF 3.0L V6 Diesel S (the first diesel to grace the drive). I hated the look of these originally but it definitely grows on you. From some angles its still plain ugly but then there are those that are positively gorgeous, the rear quarter for example that may be purely Aston Martin inspired but surely thats not a bad thing. Performance wise the twin turbo diesel can hold its own against the XJR in some respects, as we've found out in some interesting head to head experiments, although I still can't get comfortable with the sound of a diesel at idle.

Anyway back to the XJR, which currently still resides in my fathers garage. The offers from the dealership in part exchange and sub £2-3K figures that private sales of these are fetching didn't inspire the old man to part with his old stead. Instead he uses it to its full potential on the odd weekends when he gets an itch that a turbocharged diesel just cannot satisfy, as do I whenever I'm back for a weekend visit.

The R is in immaculate condition, although the wheels could do with a refurb, having covered ~80K many of which were motorway miles and been consistently pampered at the local dealership. Its in silver with cream leather interior and although obviously dated when sitting next to the XF (also in silver) it still looks good. In fact in my opinion its low, wide stance and traditional jaguar XJ shape really encompasses a period for Jaguar that is no more. Admittedly this period likely had more lows than highs and the new generation Jags have brought us into a completely new dimension but having grown up in that old Jaguar period, when I look at these two cars sat side by side I know which one I'd take the keys for everytime. I truly believe that XJR is the best of the 'old' XJ's, the aluminium variant that followed was an impressive bridge between the past and present direction for Jaguar, but in my opinion this was the start of the company trying to please everybody; more headroom in the back will surely sell more numbers but the low roofline of cars past certainly looked better from the outside!

So here it is.. a car that hasn't been cashed back in at the dealership to cover the cost of that Bowers & Wilkins stereo upgrade, nor has it been sold on as per this shed to allow someone else the pleasure of experiencing an XJR before its run into the ground. This car is being preserved as a piece of Jaguar history as both my father and I believe this will one day be a future classic (even if we dont have any fuel to run it on!).

I must admit that I am probably biased in my opinion of modern cars, I often feel nowadays that I'm too detached from whats actually happening mechanically. I remember driving a DB9 a few years back and although it is undoubtedly a beautiful piece of engineering and design, I honestly felt happier stepping back into an Integra type-R. In the Aston I felt more like a passenger giving directions.

In the XF the driving experience is actually quite rewarding for a modern car, but I have to say all the additional safety sensors, cameras, alarms, lights are just infuriating; when attempting a parallel park on a busy street you feel as if an excited R2D2 has hitched a lift. Ok, i'm sure you can disable most of these (at least I would hope you can - although this will probably invalidate your insurance or something).

With the XJR we were at a point in time where modern advances in the automotive industry where benefiting our driving experience, where as now I honestly believe enjoyment has been compromised for the sake of safety and regulation - but I guess thats the same in all industries the world over.

Agreed on the technology point.

I used to love gadgets in cars, but after driving a new FFRR Vogue SE I couldn't help but feel most of the gadgets, whilst very clever and fancy, were superfluous.

The X300 contains just about all of the luxuries that actually make a difference - nice leather seats - maybe electric, climate, car phone and power steering. The only things missing are good in-built sat Nav and an in-built IPod compatible stereo - but both of those are easily surmountable.

Everything else like cameras, massaging seats etc are fun for a while, but are ultimately window dressing.

And the X300 is relatively easy to fix - unlike more modern luxury machines.
