RE: SOTW: Jaguar XJR

Absolute top shedding - this is what it's about. "What can I get for a grand that' a bit different to spunking finance on a depreciating brand-new Eurobox?" - and this fits the bill perfectly.
I'm not brave enough to throw my own cash at this particular moneypit, you understand - but it's definitely what Shed is about.

Maybe it is time for shed to put its money where its mouth is? After all, the unknowns relating to this car are all things that can easily be glossed over in an article. Perhaps PH should buy this and see what an ordinary punter would be letting themselves in for?
I've always preferred the 'cheap car' challenges on Top Gear than the new car tests, and I know PH could do a better job than Clarkson et al.
Do eeet. Do eeet noooow!

I have to say that it's a nice car if you could afford to run it. Potential money pit but it would be fun for a shortwhile at least. Perfect sleeper car, just de-badge it and you're done.
I do think that you boys at PH HQ are running short of ideas though, maybe next weeks shed will be a nice Merc or Beemer!!!

They aren't allowed merc SOTW's because Garlick ends up buying them...I do think that you boys at PH HQ are running short of ideas though, maybe next weeks shed will be a nice Merc or Beemer!!!
ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!
Top SOTW.
One of the best in ages (well, maybe not as good as the SOTW E30 325i I purchased last week!).
Top machine - my ideal shed.
Grace, pace, space and pure class.
These Jags still look good and command respect wherever they go.
XJR-6 definitely one fo the best engines they made, with less problems than the later (albeit, more powerful) V8 veriosn.
322 BHP for under a bag of sand? WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?
Ok, budget a bit of money for the MOT, but they are generally not too bad. Just the bodywork can corrode badly if not looked after.
And they LOVE a drink! It's the only car I have ever owned in which I saw the fuel guage dropping whilst sitting in traffic!

That is a LOT of car for the money... and I can feel my wallet starting to twitch!
Buy it for a grand, run it for a couple of months - if it doesn't need too much for the MOT; result!
If/when it horribly fails its test, break it and flog the parts on the 'bay. Bet you could get at least 800 quid back for the interior trim, engine, wheels etc.
Is that the faint possibility of turning a profit I can smell? Or just my own bullst?
MUST. RESIST. THIS. CAR.

Yes, although his is the later V8.
I had a V8 for a year, everyone loved it but I never quite clicked with it somehow. I'd be very keen to try a 6 cylinder one, I suspect they might actually be the better car. I've seen a few V12's hovering around the SOTW budget, which might be a better buy?
Yes, they did make a few manual ones, they must really shift.
they probably do, but a manual in an XJ just somehow feels wrong?I had a V8 for a year, everyone loved it but I never quite clicked with it somehow. Auto boxes really do suit these cars, as they are true wafting machines!

What a terrible shed for Payday!
If only I could afford to insure it....
Go and run some quotes and prepare to be surprised. If only I could afford to insure it....
These were on my shortlist 2.5 years ago, and at 21 were very affordable. The 2.8 Z3 I ended up qith cost quite a bit more to insure and has over 100 bhp less!

A mate had one of these until quite recently. It was ridiculously fast, superlatively comfortable, handled surprisingly well, and emptied his wallet alarmingly frequently, and at the slightest opportunity. It also drank fuel at the rate you would expect given its performance. He absolutely adored it.
Not a car for OCD sufferers, unless you have a deep pocket. There will always be something that needs attention. The trick to running one seems to be to ignore / live with the niggles, and keep on top of the critical bits. The mechanicals on my mate's car were pretty reliable.
Being an realtively new XJR owner myself, I can contest to this, I think I will have to learn to live with certain niggles...not finding it easy yet but i'm sure it will come. I have a Auto XJ8 total waft and a fantastic car can not fault it (ok a few more MPG would not be sniffed at) I have also got a manual X300 (only a 3.2 sport not an ‘R’) but it is just fantastic fun on it's slightly lower profile rubber, lower springs etc it really is such fun to drive about in. A bit of a pain in the traffic next to the XJ8 but so too is any manual car. An XJR-6 with a manual box would rock in my opinion. Been lurking on Piston Heads for a while now but this weeks SOTW has made me join as back in 95 I had exactly the same car. Same colour scheme the lot.
Can honestly say it was the best motor I have ever owned. 6 Months old when I bought it. Swapped it for my 911 as at the time I had a small family and needed the space.
A limo that could play sports car when needed. On a particularly fine trip back from the Monaco GP across the Alps power sliding the rear end out of the hair pins was just heaven. A friend in a F355 on the same trip commented that as fast as he went "Every time I looked in my rear view mirror all I could see was you with a great big grin in that bloody great arm chair of yours".
It did like a drink but in those days it wasn't a case of fuel consumption but that it needed a bigger fuel tank.
Absolute top car
