The engine and gearbox combination is slightly out of sync with it dropping out of Vtec on most upshifts due to the ratios but it's still easy enough to make pretty quick progress when the mood takes you.
The car doesn't drop out of VTEC if you time the changes correctly, it needs some practice though! You need to change gear literally when the limiter is about cut in at 8800 rpm, or is it 8600 rpm.
Is there a lower final drive available ? failing that what about a vtec controller or just upping the rev limit (maybe not a great idea on engines north of 100k though!)

. . . the gear ratios are just wrong, changing up will often drop you outside the VTEC band which is just daft - I've no idea what they were planning there but once you get used to the car, it really does feel like the wrong gearbox was installed - ...
The engine has to be spot on to deliver. What could seem as a detail for any other car can turn out to be a huge issue on a Honda. Make sure you have a diamond garage geezer near to have all set up a 101% for you. And: 3rd party bits may look good but can seriously spoil the fun.

Superb car: makes a similar Beemer blush. Especially for this money!

You do literally have to take it to the limiter but the limiter is at 7850.

There is a lower final drive available which will probably make it on to my car at some point.

The engine light came up on mine a little while after I bought it, cleaned the inlet plate thingy and egr valve, reset the ecu and it was fine after that. Half an hour job and very easy to do.

I would do a compression check on this car if I was buying, just for peace of mind.

It was a clogged up egr valve so cleaned it out and ecu reset and it's done.

Great to hear. One job done so, what's next? A service & cambelt?

The limiter in the ATR is something like 8000, def not 8600 or 8800, with Vtec activation at 5800, it can be done if you get it spot on but it's very easy to drop out of Vtec.

I still enjoy giving mine a thrash most journeys though.

Maybe you might keep us posted on the car. It would be nice to hear your getting it sorted and giving it due attention, nothing more enjoyable than getting a car back to it's former glory.

That was an amazing easter bargain, must be worth at least £2k even without the Ac working, these cars still have a strong following good ones go for upwards of £5k still. They are great to drive with a split personality, you have to really push hard to get through to its true abilities at which point all the fuss people make about them really makes sense with trully impressive chuckable handling for a saloon, a saloon that thinks its a 1000 kg hot hatch!

Indeed - it's been an absolute tragedy watching Honda slowly throw all that good work and good will out the window
Yes, sadly they do seem to be going back to crap these days. Hi tech crap.

It's no big miss. The Vtec does pretty much fk all anyway, as far as I can tell it just makes the engine sound a bit raspier, there's a slight jerk when the cams go into high lift mode, but nothing else to write home about. It also makes the spontaneous MPG meter drop a bit.

with all due respect you have a 2 litre 163bhp model (going by your own thread) whereas the type R has 209bhp and is probably lighter so there'll be a fair difference.

It's a funny engine and I have owned a few civic type r in the past (joys of working for a Honda dealer) I like the fact you learn the engine revs and just get the car in vtec mode in all the gears and it's just one of those engines that has something special about it. Its like turbo lag ie nothing nothing nothing and then the vtec kicks in lol

Back in 1996/97 209 bhp from a 2.2l was pretty good. These cars can and still do show up a lot of more modern stuff, the 0-60 isn't anything to write home about nowadays but the chassis is sweet.

If was a pile of st I wouldn't have kept mine for 8.5 years, the problems is what to replace it with!

That is a bargain beautiful car and a steal of a price. The A7 engine on it's own is worth a fair bit then you got the recaros and other goodies. In the typical price catagory i would prefer a DC2 over one of these but i still love the accords even if a lot of of people don't like them.

Great cars these. Have one as a track slag that has done 198,00 miles (still on the original unopened unit). The last 8,000 miles have been on track doing 100 lap days practically non stop. The engines are literally bullet proof provided you keep doing the oil changes.

Re final drive: an amazing mod (knocked 5 seconds off the lap time!). No waiting for VTEC. Car now keeps up with E46 M3's in the dry!

Also ATR having LSD FWD makes it a real giant killer in the wet.

Agreed its not the best looking car. But thats the charm. Passing exotica on track in Grandad's Accord never ceases to make you laugh wink
