Personally I've never been a fan, but when looking at buying either of the 2 cars below, it seems most have spoilers on them frown Especially the MG, in which around 95% have a big gash spoiler.

MG:
With

Without

BMW E36 Coupe:

Without:

Is it just me that prefers this "clean" look?

The M3 looks better "with", the MG looks better in the dark.

I think they both look better without the spoilers, too.

MrDaves three step approach to solving this problem.

1) Buy whatever car you like

2)Remove spoiler and repair holes/paint discolouration where fitted
-or-
2) Buy same coloured bootlid from scrappies/ebay/owners forum

3)Bask around in your spoilerless glory. Most cars look better with the spoiler though in my opinion.

I think the grill behind the front wheels on that MG looks worse than the spoiler.

Don't be silly that grill is to feed the twin turbos. And you need the spoiler so the rear driven wheels can get traction!

On a side note my big gripe with some manufacturers is the liberal flinging of spoilers at cars backsides with no thought to high speed balance. Porsche famously in the 80s sold 911s with a sport package including front and rear spoilers, you couldn't have the rear spoiler without the front to counteract front end lift at speed.

My Audi has the sport package from the factory, which along with a load of brake and suspension upgrades includes a fantastic hollow alloy spoiler (I'm a bloke the thought of hollow alloy does it for me) yet get over 125-130mph and the front end starts to float. Doesn't happen on the standard car without spoiler.

I really seriously hope you dont believe what you are saying about a spoiler pushing down on the driven wheels (which you are saying in jest). Thats just not how spoilers work.

To be fair, in that case that's nothing to do with the spoiler.

More down to the absurd lowering and hideous wheels than the spoiler's lack.

Yep the MG looks gash, like a poor man's scooby or something. Big spoilers are fine on rally reps but meh on MGs.

So removing the spoiler makes the suspension collapse?
Best leave it as it is then really. The impreza looks much better with the rear wing. The new saloon version looks like something is missing without it.

A spoilers job is to sheer the air at the back of the car to stop a laminar flow sticking to the "falling" surfaces of the car causing a low pressure zone over the back of the car, and hence causing rear-end lift and drag.

A wing's job is to sit in clean air and provide downforce via an inverted aerofoil.

The BMW is a spoiler, the MG is probably a decoration with no aerodynamic advantages at all. hehe

If the MG's is anything, it's a wing - it's too high off the bodywork to be a useful spoiler. That little lip on the back of the MG's boot lid is a spoiler, and probably does much more than the big wing thing.
