RE: Porsche Cayman S Black Revealed
Discussion
IMO Porsches are impressive sports cars, esp the GT3's etc.
However, for this Cayman the 'extra bhp' claim in particular shows it up as a rather mean marketing exercise that pulls the wool over most customers' eyes who don't understand the technical quirks of engine design (and why should they?).
The engine torque is unchanged, so the small extra bhp quoted is simply from raising the rev limit by 200rpm, and is found over those last few rpm (which will not be felt on the road other than a very slightly higher rev limit between gears). The power throughout the rest of the rev range is unchanged, so it will therefore accelerate no more quickly than the standard S.

If I'm not mistaken, they had one of these a couple of years ago as well. I wonder why the special Cayman editions are always black? Why don't they do them in other colors for e.g. Germany's racing colors; white and silver?
You're right, the Design Edition 1 was black, but the colour wasn't the "special" bit. It was the briefcase full of goodies that came with the car - Porsche watch, sunglasses etc. However, the Gen 1 run-out model was the Cayman S Sport, which came in Viper Green and GT3 Orange and no extra cost. Would have loved Viper Green for my Cayman R, but I wasn't going to pay PTS prices or wait the extra six months - if it had been free though...

I always find this site funny for people complaining about the price of cars. A standard Cayman S is GBP75k here let alone a special edition we will never get.
And you can import Holdens and Jap cars cheaper than we can. Not entirely sure what your point is.As to the Porker...exclusivity, that's all it is. The only reason it will sell out is because of the limited numbers (not because there are few to sell but because the buyers will be 1 in 500). Marketing pure and simple.
Does this mean my Wifes Boxster S is a "black edition"? It's for sale in the PH classifieds, on the back of this she should stick another couple of grand on the asking price...
I must admit I am loving the Cayman now, when they get a bit cheaper I think I will get one. Until I can afford a GT3 I think that is my realistic aim!

It amazes me people come up with 'magazine/chisel jaw types' statements which are so wide of the mark, without driving the model they're commenting on, get out and drive one to make an informed decision.
You only have to look through the classifieds to see that the vast majority of Caymans were spec'd, and that's with many options. Hardly any are bought with a thought for how the additional weight of each option effects it's dynamic ability. Al I said was that Porsche are cashing in on the market for customers who want the most powerful version of the engine with the toys.I don't imply any offence using the term 'chisel jaw type'. If you are spending >£50K on a car and decide not to have air-con because it weighs 10kg, it would be numb not to care about the additional 20kg around your waist.
Not the case from memory - EDITED - went back to check the stats and you are right!!
The Spyder makes 320hp at 7200rpm peak torque 4750rpm
The Cayman R makes 330HP at 7300rpm torque same as above
Question is - with sport engaged the Spyders rev limit is something like 7400/7500 - does this mean there will be no difference?

The 'black edition' may not offer great value for money but this thread got me thinking- and looking
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2781177.htm
Ninety five percent of the driving experience at less than fifty percent of the cost. These are looking cheap to me.

Absolutely. I paid £15k for my 987 1 year ago, same chassis and grip, a bit less straight line perf of course but I still have my licence. Less running cost. My total monthly budget is £300 inc. depreciation, petrol, insurance, tax, servicing/brakes/tyres, tax, etc etc. Unbeatable value IMO.http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2781177.htm

And yes, one can compare SH to new, they are both cars.

so let me get this right ... they took things off it because it was too much of a match for the 911 and now they're adding performance (but only tiny amounts because no doubt of it's threat to the 911) and charging more monies ... suckers?
Or they have realised that mid-engine and rear engine are actually 2 different markets with an overlap smaller than they thought...sykotoyRS4 said:
It's a chicks car. Why go half way. Rather buy a second hand 911, the real one.
I thought these sort of comments had been consigned to the past now that many more people had actually spent time in a Cayman/Boxster and realised that it is an outstanding car in its own right.Asterix said:
